astreus,

The idea that a government can instruct the courts to ignore human rights legislation shows how fundamentally broken the liberal “democracy” system is.

This from the government that just made saying “I am intolerant towards the idea of liberal parliamentary democracy” an example of extremism but saying “foreigners don’t deserve human rights” is not extremism.

astreus,

The unity courses got revamped about 2 years back and I really enjoyed them and made some pretty fun and cool games!

100% agree the pricing is clearly a marketing scam, especially when they have a humble bundle every month.

astreus,

I’m slowly realising one of the joys of FOSS is the community driven aspect means free or ko-fi funded courses tend to be really good.

astreus,

Honestly, go for it! There is definitely space for the knowledge to be shared - especially in the beginner+ -> Intermediate space.

astreus, (edited )

This is a good summary on the forum about it being very surface level for a “Complete 2D course”: community.gamedev.tv/t/…/232289

The Unity courses felt more like an educational experience, taking you through more concepts in a really clear manner where you do feel like you understand what you’re doing. There are more projects that are tailored to demonstrate concepts which are clearly outlined and shown why you are writing this code in this manner, potential alternatives (and opinions on which to use) and the logic behind C#. By the last project, I found myself totally customising the platformer. I added a robust weapons system, different enemies, and a scoring system.

The Godot course is much, much shorter and the things the instructor chooses to focus on feels more like basic maths/general logic instead of why you’re typing what you’re typing. I tried modifying the last project (only 3 projects long and not exactly complex) and simply didn’t have the tools to add an effective singleton (which is only ever mentioned once, right at the end, never by name, and only in the context of having continuous music).

Reminder: crypto isn’t solarpunk. It’s cyberpunk.

Listening to a recent episode of the Solarpunk Presents podcast reminded me the importance of consistently calling out cryptocurrency as a wasteful scam. The podcast hosts fail to do that, and because bad actors will continue to try to push crypto, we must condemn it with equal persistence....

astreus,

Look into Nano. Actually trying to be an alternative currency, instant transfer (0.4s average), no fees, and uses 1KWh per 10,000 transactions.

Lots of different ways to apply this technology, don’t assume it’s all bitcoin.

astreus,

Removed by mod for providing an example of a counterpoint that’s eco friendly?

astreus,

I dunno, I usually open a textbook by turning over the front cover 🥁

weak aptitude for language learning

This is such bullshit. As a Brit abroad, our problem is weak language education. We are taught to such a poor degree and we are not taught how to learn a language. It’s been the biggest struggle of my adult life trying to get conversational and after a year I am still way behind my cohorts - it’s not some genetic predisposition to being bad at language learning, but a lack of language infrastructure in childhood.

astreus,

Not entirely sure what you’re saying, sorry if I got it wrong, but it seems like you’re implying I said the opposite of what I actually posted.

My point was there is no genetic predisposition to being bad at language learning but that the language education in the UK is woefully bad. I’ve spent more time learning how to learn Spanish than actually learning it because we’re not taught the skill of language acquisition from childhood.

The reason the government hasn’t invested in language skills is because it’s the lingua franca (the irony of that phrase isn’t lost on me), but the argument of “weak aptitude for language learning” used in the article is patently false.

astreus,

Ahh just misread then, all good :D

astreus,

That is a game changer because I’ve now seen way too much of that tutorial 😂

astreus,

Hmmm that kinda sucks, but I didn’t want to play permadeath in the first place haha. I’ll dig into the settings more

astreus,

Common myth, not true.

First recorded recipe for Shepherds Pie is from a Scottish cookbook from 1849. First recorded use of Cottage Pie is 1791 by an English clergyman.

Cottage Pie was used for both lamb and beef varieties until recently and was a way of eating leftover meats.

astreus,

My favourite “traditional” English meal is a good Steak and Kidney pie, made with an ale sauce. Seasoned with lots of pepper, Worcestershire sauce (anchovy sauce), onion and stock. Absolutely delicious.

astreus,

Gnostic Gospels is where it’s at! Oldest surviving (non metal/stone) books in existence!

astreus,

I read them recently - mostly it’s the same stuff as in the canon gospels tbh. Some have more of a Buhdist slant (Jesus isn’t God but we’re all god style) but nothing out there.

astreus,

My mate gifted me Ratopia and I gotta say I’m enjoying it. Not as much as he seems to, but it’s a good city sim!

US: Let’s send weapons to our allies that are at war! Iran: We’ll do the same! US: shocked Pikachu face

astreus,

That’s patently false. The conflict started with the rise of Zionism in the early 20th century fuelled by anti-semitism; wanting Jewish people out of Europe. This led to the Balfour deceleration in 1917, which caused an uprising in Palestine with people demanding an independent homeland. The British crushed this uprising. Then the UN backed a plan in 1947 to give Palestine to Jewish settlers which caused the 1948 war which led to mass expulsion of Palestinians from their homeland (whom have not been allowed to return since) and the creation of the Gaza ghetto. Every year, more land is taken in what has been called a “Salami” invasion (i.e. one small slice at a time) in Gaza and the West Bank, forcing people into worse and worse conditions in the world’s largest open-air prison.

Furthermore, Hamas was not elected. There haven’t been elections in Gaza since 2006. The median age in the strip is 18, meaning most of its population wasn’t even born when Hamas took power. It is simply the largest gang in the prison.

This is the latest chapter in an incredibly sad story, not the start of it. In fact, just before the Hamas attack, Israel opened fire on unarmed protestors at the boarder. Literally a week before the attack.

astreus,

If more than 50% of your population wasn’t born during the last election, no one elected you. If there hasn’t been an election for 18 years, no one elected you. If you took power via an armed coup to dissolve the unity government (Battle of Gaza, 2007) no one elected you.

NOTE: Gaza as a distinct political entity did not exist during the last election in 2006
