The thing about a political campaign centered around a notable fraudster with a published fascist platform that includes literal Nazi references in its media materials is that it's so outlandish to be unbelievable for most people.

They've been taught that America is better than this; that we're somehow exceptional; that it can't happen here. It's not; we're not; it is, in fact, happening right now.

Campaigners are in a tough spot. How do you make the message land when it sounds like a movie?

Which newsrooms are doing a good job of in-house technical and product innovation? What makes them stand out in your mind?

ben,

@guacamayan Awesome! What about its product / technology stands out for you?

"The free version of Apple News is one of the biggest news platforms in the world. It’s the most widely used news application in the United States, the U.K., Canada, and Australia, and boasted over 125 million monthly users in 2020." And publications are becoming dependent on it. #Media https://werd.io/view/664b71ebb03e591ffd06b8d2

@kumarvibe I bet that too!

"I want the IndieWeb to be a viable alternative to social media, gradually widening the audience beyond tech-savvy folks by making the tools easier to use and more reliable." This is what we were trying for with Known. https://werd.io/view/664b6e260510a99fb30adb72

Why it’s usually better to work with a talented designer: here are some sketches I did for my own ShareOpenly icon. I, uh, do not have the touch.

@wreimers The final one is a vectorized SVG!

This week’s had a lot of good things to say and was gripping from start to finish. Really appreciated the anti-war, who-really-benefits message. Still the best show ever.

A lovely blog post by Jon Hicks on his process for creating the ShareOpenly icon. Characteristically, lots of care and attention went into this. https://werd.io/view/66478c57e052fabafd0db252

I've added @ben's fediverse-friendly ShareOpenly to the Hicks.design Journal, and blogged a bit about the icon:

@Luke @jonhicks I'll check on this! Thanks for the heads up.

Oh, hey, there's a new Ani album out today. I've seen her live almost 20 times; been following for decades and decades. Looking forward to listening. https://anidifranco.bandcamp.com/album/unprecedented-sh-t

This is great news for Mozilla, for everyone who uses the internet, and for everyone who cares about ethics, privacy, and human rights. https://werd.io/view/664608b99c4a04a4850e6292

What’s important: inclusively supporting the democratic public interest in a way that makes everyone’s lives better.

What’s not important: maintaining incumbent institutions.

People are what’s important, not a stable status quo.

In your organization, how do you share provocations, reflections, and thoughts about the future with each other? In Medium, it's Hatch, their internal version of the platform. At Automattic it's P2. What do you have?

If Google makes its money through contextual ads on search results pages now, in an AI-driven world it’ll make its money through sponsored answers (or just contextual ads related to the answers). The way sites will continue to get traffic is through buying ads.

@ben@werd.social avatar

@researchbuzz Right. I’m not cheerleading, just speculating!

ben,
@ben@werd.social avatar

@researchbuzz I’m worried about that too! We will find out very soon.

ben,
@ben@werd.social avatar

@researchbuzz So the question for me is: is there room systemically for a replacement? It feels like the market is completely locked down. So those of us who can will create our own solutions, like you are, but for most people, this is what the internet will be.

ben,
@ben@werd.social avatar

@researchbuzz That's an interesting thought. I wonder if orgs like the NYPL would start something, too. Or even the Internet Archive!

ben,
@ben@werd.social avatar

@Jonathanglick I think that's very true.

Pitch: Google Reader over ActivityPub

ben,
@ben@werd.social avatar

@tylrfishr Ghost is building it. Someone else should too.

ben,
@ben@werd.social avatar

@tylrfishr I had a great conversation with them a while back. They're really in this - but it's tightly integrated with Ghost. I want to see something very standalone, too.
