Whoa. I feel like I've just arrived. My blog post on my learning in public adventures (https://bob-irving.com/117-2/) was reposted by @sachac ! I've been following her weekly emacs updates and found myself there. Like I said, whoa!

It's nice to be part of a pretty technical community that supports stumbling bumbling n00bs like me.

Looking for recos for Linux screencasting software for uploading to YT. This might be one of the last things I'll actually need Windows for. I currently use ScreenPal (formerly Screencastomatic). It's simple enough for me, but they don't have a linux version.

And I know OBS is awesome and everything, but I like simple a lot better than awesome.

Since I'm always the first to get upset at crappy customer service, I'd like to send a shoutout to #logitech for working with me to enable my MX Keys keyboard so that it works in my dual boot situation. I love the keyboard but basically gave up on it since I couldn't use it to dual boot. It wouldn't detect bluetooth until boot, so I had to use 2 keyboards to navigate the situation. All working now! So thanks to logitech support for sticking with me until the issue was solved.

@jake4480 Yes, I was very pleasantly surprised, even though it took about 5 Reddit comments and 11 emails. They stuck with it and solved it.

Taking my new (to me) ThinkPad 450 out for its first stroll. Using it while waiting for the car to be serviced. #linuxmint, #firefox, #emacs, all working like a charm. Keyboard and touchpad are almost perfect, battery life is super long. Screen is a little dim but hey. For under $100US I'm not complaining. This is exactly why I got it and set it up with linux, etc. Oh, also doing some journaling with #orgmode and it seems to be syncing to my home computer with #syncthing. Just about perfect!

@holgerschurig Thanks for that. A PET2001? We're not talking Commodore PET, are we? Wow. I'm a Commodore Basic guy from the 64 days. And yes, very small steps do add up!

Installed on my 2 linux machines last night. Seems to be working so far, though I haven't yet figured out exactly how it all works -- what syncs with what, how often, etc. But they can see each other and share.

Next is trying to get it going on my Win10 machine. For some reason, that makes me nervous! But if I can get all 3 synced, and working on all of them, I'll be pretty jazzed.

Anybody ever get connecting to Google Drive recently? AFAF

birv2,
@birv2@pkm.social avatar

@jake4480 Got an error saying it couldn't connect. Evidently a known issue, so maybe related to google's authentication lately. Not worth the effort, so I thought I'd ask if anyone else had found a solution. All of my historical documents are on my Windows partition and then backed up to GDrive. So I downloaded the file I needed to my Linux Mint Downloads directory. Works for today!

I'm finding some really interesting blogs out there, and am reminded of the early days of the internet, when it wasn't all monetized and people just wrote about stuff they were interested in for fun. And I had an RSS feeder and got updates when people posted stuff. Plus blogrolls.

So I'm sure there's a way to do this now in , right? Can someone point me in the right direction? I've heard about elfeed but don't know anything about it.

Thanks, good people of Mastodon.

@publicvoit Downloaded the iOS app, thanks! You say there’s a free version?

So excited that I was able to write a blog post in and publish it to my blog from within orgmode! The new post ain't much to look at, and there's no content to speak of. Just a proof of concept. And it proofed!

Thanks, !

@jake4480 I know! Still a noob roguelike gamer, but I'm loving them. I also got Dwarf Fortress on Steam but haven't set that up yet on .

Looking forward to setting up my used with next week. Looking for recos for easy syncing, mainly for my and stuff. What have you used that you could recommend? I do have GDrive working well on my Windows machines, so could go that route,, though not familiar with how to do that on linux. Thanks!

birv2,
@birv2@pkm.social avatar

@publicvoit What's your setup and workflow? I've got 2 Windows machines and 2 Linux. Have looked at syncthing but it seemed overwhelming.

birv2,
@birv2@pkm.social avatar

@publicvoit Thanks very much! I think it might be the ticket. Question -- does it only sync on startup on each device? When does it happen?

birv2,
@birv2@pkm.social avatar

@TheSecondVariation @publicvoit If you're asking me, I'm trying to figure out how to sync my stuff across multiple devices: Windows, LinuxMint, iPhone, iPad..... so that I can do and on all of them.

birv2,
@birv2@pkm.social avatar

@publicvoit @debajit Karl, do you have any privacy/security concerns with keeping your files on Git? I wonder about even private repos there.

birv2,
@birv2@pkm.social avatar

@publicvoit @tivasyk Also, does this work if your home computer doesn't run 24/7?

birv2,
@birv2@pkm.social avatar

@publicvoit @tivasyk So whichever one is "live" is the current host?

birv2,
@birv2@pkm.social avatar

@publicvoit @tivasyk I'm getting my used Thinkpad tomorrow. First I'll put linux and emacs on it. Then I'll start to work on putting SyncThing on that and my desktop. Hoping for the best! Thanks for the discussion and suggestions.

I'm a noob to and loving it. Just wondering how many other "platforms" accept or translate .org files? Or will I usually have to change formats if using a file elsewhere?
