I wrote a post about how we’re going to connect @everywherecomputer to

Specifically, as evolves to be run as more of a commons network

Links to join the live event at this afternoon are in the post.

boris,

@happyborg thanks!

Happy to talk more about IPFS. It’s actually not about permanent storage, but rather permanent, immutable identifiers - content addresses - that point to self verifying data.

From my POV — permanent, global content addresses are a great starting point to build lots of things on, and collaborating on a commons network is part of that.

boris,

@happyborg

So just like people persist data on Arweave or Storj or Filecoin from IPFS, you’d build a service to upload, and then run an IPFS gateway + nodes to be part of the network.

The most confusing part is pinning != persistence. Commercial providers often all call it pinning, but technically you’re paying them for persistence.

boris,

@happyborg it’s a p2p system there aren’t really clients.

I think you need to think about use cases and personas and then design a system.

boris,

@happyborg you can browse code projects at Awesome IPFS https://github.com/ipfs/awesome-ipfs

Persona development and user research are pretty well known techniques.

If you want me to boil it down — describe the service offering you’re proposing and interview some people on their needs

A couple hot takes while we’re all talking about Substack. Unbundled subscriptions to individual blogs feel like a wild business model, a bubble I’m shocked has yet to burst. And email is a terrible way to blog.

boris,

@misc paid premium email newsletters have a long history. And often for much much more money.

Substack integrated payments and member management and gated content all together. Ghost is the most notable clone, and Wordpress.com recently followed this.

The writing interface of all of them is pretty good.

And of course, Patreon effectively does this too.

If the masses are not going to pay for news or music or recipes…it turns out 1000 true fans may very well pay $10/month.

boris,

@misc I make patron payments to a handful of accounts that don’t gate content.

And you can reward people who don’t content gate by paying for stuff you like.

Same with music or any other digital creations you enjoy.

Large companies adopting open standards is what winning looks like.

Automattic, Medium, Flipboard, and even Mozilla are examples of other corporates who are already here.

Wish there was an "apple store" to try hands on all the little niche e-ink / stylus devices that get sold online.

boris,

@misc I bought one back in 2021 and didn’t realize until you mentioned it / I researched it that subscriptions are now (sort of, last 50 pages free?) required.

The BOOX are e-ink devices I’ve recommended recently although I don’t have one myself https://shop.boox.com/products/noteair3
