My littlest, one year ago. She’s turning 2 this Friday and my son is turning 5 in a couple weeks. 😭

It’s really sad what’s happened to James Howard Kunstler. Not sure how he went from urbanist hero to anti-vaxx alt-right whacko.

Decluttered a bit this past weekend after Christmas filled our house with too many things. On the highest shelf of my bedroom closet is where I’ve kept my brother’s ashes for almost 3 years. I can’t bring myself to part with them, but my heart keeps telling me they deserve to be somewhere else.

Anyone self-hosting Actual for budgeting? Did you setup Plaid? If so, got any tips?

✨ Trying to figure out what level of trickery and deceit I’ll need to employ over the next few days in order to finish the wrapping.

I have on occasion heard people compare the climate of the Pacific Northwest to that of London. But after spending some time in the UK, I just don't agree. Our summers average 10 degrees (F) warmer and are very dry. Portland has a climate much more like Bordeaux, France.

A reminder to all you dads out there:

Get yourself something nice for Christmas. Christ knows no one else is going to πŸ˜‚

bryan,

@miffyhelen

Kind of boring, but I got myself a small, high-end, Italian-made Swiss Army knife.

bryan,

@maique thanks, my thoughts too. I opted for one with fewer gadgets in hopes of it being small enough for my keychain.

bryan,

@maique nice! Yeah, no need for a saw on my end. If I’m being honest, the bottle opener will be the tool with the most use πŸ˜‰

You really can’t beat this for November in Portland.

bryan,

@BigAngBlack I’m from Michigan, anything is better than snow.

bryan,

@BigAngBlack been here going on 10 years. The clouds don’t bother me in the winter too much, at least they break up, unlike that low lake effect crap.

I have my in-laws over for Thanksgiving this year, so we had a full house and it was a lot of fun! My first time cooking a turkey…turned out pretty good. Now we are just drinking old fashioneds, eating coconut cream pie, and huddled around the living room watching football and playing with the kids.

Santa almost forgot to close up the attic.

Happy Thanksgiving, friends. I’m cooking this year, pray for me.

I remember when I used to go into debt to afford buying people gifts for the holidays. It’s so not worth it. Most people can’t even remember what you got them last year.

  • bryan,

@mph NPR’s coverage of the 2016 election really opened my eyes as to how bad it really was. It’s better than many things, but it’s still sad.

Maps of Phoenix and Milan, but with swapped public rail networks, to scale.

    Milan metro population: 4.4 million
    Phoenix metro population: 5 million

Lack of rail transit in the US is a policy choice, not a geographic issue.

Makes me feel halfway normal for having a child at 40.

Also, TIL former President John Tyler’s (born 1790) grandson is still alive. https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2023/06/01/dad-al-pacino-baby-robert-de-niro/

    bryan,

    @Hey_Beth

Yesterday, at the park with my 19-month-old daughter, a teenage girl called a woman who looked younger than me β€˜grandma’ and I about fainted.

Also about half my graduating class (1999) have kids who have graduated.

    But hey, who’s keeping track.

β€˜Great grandma is 65’…I guess that could make sense if everyone’s having babies before 20. My mom had me at 19 but I bucked the trend I guess.

I have an aunt-in-law who is about 65 and raising her grandkids because her son/DIL are meth heads.

I guess the lesson here is to withhold judgment. You never know what people’s stories are.

    PS, also tired.
