🕹️ Playing Gauntlet. Not bad for a total Diablo ripoff.

@gabz I've got it on my SteamDeck but haven't gotten to it yet! What do you think?

This is the third “woke is actually ..." thing I've read this week, and maybe my favorite in terms of the sheer perverse joy it brings me. GET IN LINE, MARX AND FOUCAULT! THE HORNED ONE APPROACHES! https://techpolicy.social/@mnot/112401818111499846

@jbaty I've got one upstairs! My PowerShot G5 from 2004 is high on my list of digital cameras. Great build, lovely images, decent control. It was on my mind when I went back to fixed-lens with the X100S, after some unsatisfying mid-tier dSLRs from Nikon and Pentax. They could make something nice if they commit to the bit.

I changed my mind. Even portraits look bad on the iPhone.

@lkanies It all falls apart. Like, everything is so hyper tuned there's no room to work. Every time I think "I should just take the phone" I reach for the GRIII (except wet weather).

@lkanies I'm happiest when having a camera on me is an everyday habit. I usually lose the habit when I don’t range out of my neighborhood now and then. Looking back over everything, my most productive time was the fall and winter I would ride into work with Al, who was on the far south end of downtown, then walk the length of downtown to the office on 2nd. Good morning light and then nice night time street stuff on the way back for the ride home.

How the Term “Hoosier” Became a Weapon in the Class War

“In English, we’ve got an excess of terms that reinforce the boundary between the rich and the poor. But we also have a vast lexicon meant to divide the working class, separating the diligent and noble poor from their supposedly lazy or ungrateful counterparts. Those monikers are a rare window into the granular sociopolitical realities of people who often don’t have their history recorded at all.”

✍️ Enjoying the rare pleasure of "here's a hot take I can toot!" evolving into "I should elucidate in a full blog post" devolving into "No, a toot will do after all!" and landing on "Jesus Christ, nobody cares what I think about iPads."

@lkanies that sounds healthy

@lkanies @dennyhenke
I begrudge nobody their happiness with their iPad. This Jason Snell thing is what caused me to nearly write something down. It wasn't even going to be scurrilous.

@lkanies The “have only ever felt the need to write about them once" is what I thought sounded healthy.

mph,
@mph@social.lol avatar

@lkanies It's an eternal struggle and I am not going to sit here and deny my curiosity. What I have chosen to give up on is needing iPads to do or become something in particular.

(Oh ... they're out since I started typing this. ESC key and a landscape camera. Huh.)

mph,
@mph@social.lol avatar

@lkanies Parse error. Which is "a device I would rarely use”? The MacBook or the iPad?

I think my bottom line on this one is "I'm glad they made the hardware changes they did, but will sit it out for now because iPadOS is the remaining problem for anything other than content consumption and/or 'productivity-in-a-pinch.'"

@spacewizard Yeah, it all seems fine. Honestly the piece of tech commentary I'm having the most feelings about this week is Marques Brownlee's eulogy for small phones.

@spacewizard Yeah, just can't see it. It's an interesting statement, I guess. It'd be interesting to know how sales have broken down in a year. And reminds me that many of the people who write and talk about these things for a living don't have the "pro" workloads something this specced up supports. They need a Markdown editor and something to clean up the occasional product shot.

mph,
@mph@social.lol avatar

@spacewizard ... and it's that class of user who most seem to want Apple to bail them out of the tradeoffs they implicitly accepted but don't like. Like, "virtualize macOS so we can have auto-MacBootcamp depending on if a keyboard is attached"?

I'm resolved to let people like things, but holy cow.

mph,
@mph@social.lol avatar

@spacewizard Yeah, no, I'm in my own head here. :-) Every time there's iPad news, the Content Industry spins up, but the opinions they offer are way past the skis of what they can usefully opine about.

That article you linked seems like a rare-ish admission that the new Pros are beyond the writer's ken.

Like, hobbyists gonna hobby. Enthusiasts gonna enthuse. But it's the same dynamic as a Linux review site obsessing about the default desktop for a server OS.

🏃‍♂️ C25K w9d1: 29:42 5k time. The c25k warmup walks are still in the recording mix, so I'm not sure what I'd turn in for a just-running time. I'll find out next week when I'm just hitting "start" when I break into a run and "stop" when I finish 30 minutes of that.

I was just listening to the podcast and host John Roderick mentioned interactions on Mastodon and I was thinking about following him and... I have no idea how to find him. His account isn't posted on his personal web page, or that of the show, and searches here didn't help. Wonder if he's just participating as a normal-ass user not a findable celebrity?
