About ready to start working on my first homelab machine for self-hosting things instead of just glomming all my services on to the NAS. How feasible is it to start out on a Raspberry Pi while I get the hang of things? #selfhosting #selfhosted #homelab #raspberrypi

btp,

@sizemo Super feasible. I was surprised at how much I could run on one RPi.

@RL_Dane it's a pet for people who can't take care of pets lmao

@RL_Dane oh that, too. I didn't even think about that.

I think of this bit every time I get a young person that messes up my order at McDonalds and they give me shit because I pointed out that they did their job wrong. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gv8-Xtll3l8

There's not really any way to do no-nonsense computing, because there's just too much nonsense to avoid.

btp,
@btp@fosstodon.org avatar

@tulpa computing is nonsense 😏

I'm out of fruit for my greek yogurt, and out of milk for my cereal, but I'm not out of greek yogurt for my cereal 😏

Don't let your lack of milk keep you from eating cereal.

@joel not if you need to build VMs and images :blobfoxangrylaugh:

Windows' passive 50% memory use is literally the worst.

Damnit. I ate a whole bag and a half of rolls and now my stomach hurts. My eating habits are the same as a 12 year old's.

Wait. We all understand that privacy does not mean inapplicable or above the law, right?

@alfredohno Proton is clear about what user data it retains, which includes this information that was provided to law enforcement.

Expecting privacy in a service to mean no information at all is unreasonable.

My boss told me that ARM chips are for toys and children and only real machines run x86. I'm still dumbfounded.

btp,
@btp@fosstodon.org avatar

Oh, this killed my chances of convincing him to let me move off of Windows to literally anything else for my work machine.

Thanks, I hate it.

btp,
@btp@fosstodon.org avatar

@joel no. I'd probably have more luck having a debate with a brick wall, honestly.

btp,
@btp@fosstodon.org avatar

@pterlisten real machines run Intel 4004

btp,
@btp@fosstodon.org avatar

@sterophonick The whole rant came about because another employee on Apple silicon could not run a customer's VPN client because it was only available for x86 devices.

He knows. He's just got a really twisted view on these technologies.
