Connective Conversations
Coming to the Table Across Difference

With Dr. Michelle Friedman and Rabbanit Dalia Davis

"There are some stereotypical tropes around the “stress of Pesach prep”, but, this year, there’s a different element of anxiety in the air.

This year more than any other year, we may also be anxious when thinking about gathering around the Passover Seder table and sitting across from family, guests with radically different worldviews than our own.

What controversial topics may arise during the Seder or the time spent together with family, friends, and community members?

Are we emotionally, mentally and spiritually prepared to encounter opinions that may be jarring and that may leave us feeling stunned, livid, isolated, and removed from the celebratory rituals of Pesach?

This year, preparing to encounter difficult conversations may be a critical and nurturing element of our Pesach preparation."

16 Takes On the "Kushite Wife" Verse That Have Nothing To Do With White Supremacy

they had other things going on in the ancient world, you know

Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg
Apr 1, 2024

"...Africanist & archeologist Solange Ashby– whose research has focused on gender in ancient Kush– argues that women in that society had an "unusually high status," and that a number of queens not only served as solo rulers (with the title Kandake) but also as priestesses & in deep relationship w/ deities found only among kings Egypt. She also asserts that later years, marked by "increased importance on indigenous Nubian traditions," saw "women ...attain unheard-of power."

It's possible that in earlier, pre-Egyptian traditions– of which we have less writing & other material culture– women also had higher status, or served as prophets, or that non-queens might also have occupied some sort of religious functionary role..."

I Used to Be Observant. Now I’m Rediscovering Judaism on My Own Terms - Over the past five years, I’ve spent my time finding the pieces of my religion that work for me. By Miriam Herman March 28, 2024

"...Things weren’t adding up: Fellow Jews do everything [Rambam] says, but his peers thought he was wrong? Is the rabbi I follow also wrong? Who is right? What is God asking of me? My 1st reason for being religious, [obeying God]...was now, in fact, in question.

...I analyzed the religious leaders around me & what I saw hurt me. They didn’t keep my confidences; they judged me harshly; they were inconsistent...

I realized I couldn’t simply follow Jewish law...in the hopes that it would connect me to God & make me a good person..."

A lot of people are treated badly by today's ortho rabbinate, who are often arrogant, misogynistic, and who choose interpretations that are hurtful or just plain wrong. But Judaism isn't the problem - they are.

Growing up Jewish on the Upper West Side ‘when housing was a human right’ by Andrew Silow-Carroll March 31, 2024

"...It was a dream made possible by a state and city program that subsidized middle-income rentals and co-ops across New York from the 1950s up until the fiscal crisis of the late ’70s. When the middle class was fleeing to the suburbs, the Mitchell-Lama Housing Program (named for the politicians who championed it in 1955) was a boon for people too well-off to qualify for public housing and too poor to afford market-rate homes.

“It celebrated the idea of the common good,” Baum told me in an interview. “It was a very comprehensive, unusual experiment that enabled the Upper West Side to retain a feeling of diversity — economically, culturally — at a time when government really believed in trying to make the city a livable place for all.”

April 22 is the night of the first Seder. The day before, April 22, is Earth Day. We are making available two possible Sedarim — one from a couple of years ago called Earth & Justice Freedom-Seder, wonderfully designed by Rabbi Nate DeGroot, an exciting text mostly by me, and a gorgeous cover illustration by Israeli artist Avi Katz.

Download the Earth & Justice Freedom-Seder at:

We will also send out another whole stripped-down Haggadah on which I have started work.

Shalom,

Presence and Absence: Images of the Divine in Kabbalah

Recurring Event (See all) $250

Tuesdays, May 7, 14, 21, 28 and June 4, 2024 from 12-2:00 p.m. EDT

We live in a time of deep division and loneliness. The Zohar, the 13th- century Kabbalistic work, offers rich and beautiful images to speak to this separation, and equally powerful ways to imagine divine presence, healing, and connection. In this series we will delve into the multifaceted, dynamic Divine through the radical imagination of the Zohar. We’ll bring what we discover into our own creativity through the Jewish Studio Process, a faciliated, intuitive use of art materials and reflective writing. We’ll pay particular attention to the experience of the Shekhinah, the feminine, immanent, indwelling Sacred Presence.

All sessions will be recorded and sent to participants. We encourage live attendance for you to get the most out of the experience.

If you don't have a kosher market in your area, or are leery of the factory farmed kosher meat most places offer, there are places you can order pasture raised organic kosher meats. My favorite is KOL foods. I order from them a few times a year. As you can imagine, they're not cheap. But if you want something special for Pesach or the High Holidays, this is my go-to place.

How Women Used Cars To Fuel Female Empowerment
From a 1915 suffragist road trip to the “First Lady of Drag Racing.” by Nancy Nichols March 20, 2024

"...Fear of women drivers was less about concern over car accidents and more about discouraging a behavior that was widely threatening not just to men, but to the larger social structure in general. “From the beginning,” historian Michael Berger writes, “everything about the car seemed masculine, from the coordination and strength required to operate it, to the dirt & grease connected with its maintenance.”

This is exactly the reason that women aren't allowed to drive in fundamentalist Islamic regimes - expect to see similar legislation arise if the christo-fascists gain power here in America. Women's autonomy flies in the face of patriarchy & they don't like it one bit.

beyond nostalgia
really, the cucumbers weren't great in Egypt

Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg
Mar 25, 2024

"...I think about the people who finally, finally told the truth, who began to generate some momentum–to be told by their institutions that recourse and accountability was coming, only to find that what they were offered fell far too short of acceptable. Only to be put in the position of having to push again, and again, and again.

I think about the people who have been trying, often single-handedly, to move organizations and institutions from the inside, listening to stakeholders whine and kvetch and resist and try to pull their way back to those oppressive systems, all the while feeling that exasperation, even extreme burnout, that Moshe does in this moment..."

Why Rabbi Shai Held says love is the cornerstone of Jewish belief and practice by Andrew Silow-Carroll March 24, 2024

“My aim,” he writes, “is to tell the story of Jewish theology, ethics, and spirituality through the lens of love and thereby to restore the heart — in both senses of the word — of Judaism to its rightful place.”

Held, 52, is the dean and president of the Hadar Institute...the flagship of the “independent minyanim” movement: lay-led congregations that function independently...

...in the book of Hosea where God is portrayed as saying, “I wish I could abandon you, Israel, but I am God and not a person” (Hosea 11:9). What makes God God are the inextinguishable and unfathomable depths of God’s love. Now, I understand that is not the way most of us experience the world. And it’s also not the way many of us were taught the Jewish tradition. But I’m trying to engage in an act of restoration, of recovery..."
