Welcome to the topsy-turvy season in the Tewish ;) calendar. This is a time when we reexamine power dynamics between women & men, the rich & poor, non-Jews & the Jewish people. How do these dynamics shift when the traditional scroll undergoes a genderbend?

In this session, we will collectively engage in the reading of the scroll of Mordekhai & explore the alternative world it presents.

Join us as we reflect on Queen Akhashveroshni’s quest for a new virgin lad to ascend to the throne; ponder the relationship between the young virgin lad, Mordekhai, and his aunt Esther, who escorts him to the queen’s fortress; delve into the tensions between Esther & the High Minister Hamani; and contemplate the resilience of the Tehudiyot who defend themselves and retaliate.

How Israel’s Black Panthers radicalized its Mizrahi Jews, and changed the country by Andrew Silow-Carroll March 17, 2024

"...[Golda] authorized the police to arrest 15 people under what today is called administrative detention, where you don’t need to bring actual charges. This was in the emergency code enacted by the British...

And of course, it backfired. Anyone with any kind of liberal leaning in Israel was asking, “Why are you arresting people?” Word gets out very quickly that raids are happening. And then every bohemian, every left-winger, every kind of professor, all these respectable people descend on City Hall to join the protest. And then they marched over to the police station where some of the Panthers are being held & demand their release. And that taught the Panthers a lesson that what they were doing was very provocative and...they knew that they were onto something.

The Shalom Center
A prophetic voice in Jewish, multireligious, and American Life.

The Shalom Report:
Chapter 9 Project is here!

"...Some individuals and communities choose to skip over these disturbing descriptions, while others read the text in a whisper or with the melancholic Eicha/Lamentations trope to express their pain over the suffering of the innocent. Additionally, there are those who remind themselves that the text is not a historical account but rather a fantastical tale of a powerless people.

But what if there was a different way to navigate this painful chapter?..."

The Best Vegan Brisket Recipe

Savory pulled mushrooms and tofu make the perfect plant-based holiday dish.

By Micah Siva | March 5, 2024

Brisket is synonymous with Jewish cuisine. It seems as though every bubbe has their own recipe that has been passed down from generation to generation. A fall-apart brisket was the centerpiece of our Hanukkah meal, with umami-rich gravy pooling onto our plates loaded with crispy potato latkes. Recreating the texture and taste of beef for a plant-based dish is challenging, but king trumpet mushrooms and grated tofu help mimic the look and feel of brisket. Serve it with roasted potatoes or latkes, or try it in a challah bun and slaw for a play on a “pulled beef” sandwich.

A Cooper Union art student’s paintings recall her Israeli family’s roots in a community shattered on Oct. 7 By Julia Gergely March 11, 2024

"...“In the art world, in recent years, there’s been a lot of focus on figurative art... This is probably the most popular form of art on the market right now — art about gender or race or ethnicity or sexuality,” Arad said. “So it’s very interesting to me that in this environment, there’s suddenly now a push towards discrediting and diminishing [Israeli and Jewish] identity.”

“The reason I’m doing this is to create work in this format that’s accepted — making work about one’s identity, but about an identity that is hated, and sometimes not even hated — sometimes just people refuse to acknowledge it exists,” she added. “In a way, every painting is just proof — you can’t say [Israeli identity] does not exist, because every painting says ‘here I am.’”

Kathy Goldman, NYC’s ‘most important food activist,’ dies at 92
By Andrew Silow-Carroll March 11, 2024

“...She was the single most important voice fighting hunger in New York for 50 years and the first to focus on food in schools, which resulted in literally thousands of kids actually eating the food as opposed to throwing it out,” Fran Barrett, Gov. Kathy Hochul’s interagency coordinator for nonprofit organizations, told the New York Times in an email.

...“It was a time when people lived in neighborhoods that they gave a damn about, with people that they gave a damn about,” Goldman told an interviewer in 2018. “Both my mother and father were big influences and activists in our community.”

Growing number of Jews using NY’s first Reform chevra kadisha burial society By Fran Kritz March 11, 2024

“The Reform community embraces its diversity, and honors it in a growing number of practices,” Garry said. “Our chevra kadisha is bringing sacred end-of-life awareness and ritual to Reform Jews, while mirroring and serving the full spectrum of the Reform community — including, for example, its trans members. It’s equally important to view the chevra kadisha as a new catalyst for critically needed end-of-life conversations in our personal and communal spaces.”

Blessing. Protection. Amulet. Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg
Mar 11, 2024

"...From the perspective of Professor Jeremy Smoak, the use of the Priestly Blessing was, in large part, "apotropaic"– having the power to avert evil– and suggests that during the First Temple period [First Temple = 10th Century - 587 BCE], priests would not only recite the blessing at the Temple, but (as these discoveries show us) inscribe them on amulets so that Israelites could use them as part of their everyday life.

The act of giving this blessing was about more than just "saying nice words."

These words were meant to effect change in the universe.
To offer actual protection.

When the priest said, "God bless you and protect you," he was, in effect, drawing down from the divine to offer that blessing and protection, in real time, to the people present.

And so, too, in the writing of the Priestly Blessing on those amulets..."

Chaplains don’t belong in public schools Mar 07, 2024 Rob Boston

"...This scheme is yet another effort to violate a fundamental principle: that America’s public schools must be secular and welcome all students, no matter their views on religion. It’s an attempt by Christian Nationalists to merge their ultraconservative, fundamentalist version of Christianity with public education. They want to convert our schools into centers of proselytization. We can’t allow that.

The majority of faith leaders and chaplains recognize that their job is to spread religious messages and offer spiritual guidance to those in need. These goals can’t be reconciled with the mission of public education, which is to impart secular education..."

From the Shamir Collective, for the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8th.

Step into the darkness, let our fear become awe, through presence. The gateway of witness and experience, of noticing how the cosmos speaks for us and ushers us through the portals we are beckoning.

Pause – approach, experience, release – we practice day by day. This is the moment we practice for: cosmic ritual. We do not need to do more than be here for it, show up to it – we needn’t build an altar (though altars are welcome), instead create an ambiance to welcome the eclipse – for it is Here.

UN report validates ‘clear and convincing’ allegations of Hamas sexual violence
By Ron Kampeas March 4, 2024

"...The report added that, in terms of the more than 250 hostages taken to Gaza, there is “clear and convincing information that some have been subjected to various forms of conflict-related sexual violence including rape and sexualized torture and sexualized cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and it also has reasonable grounds to believe that such violence may be ongoing.”

Women are always vulnerable to sexual violence when they are considered second class (or worse) by any patriarchal society. Men feel entitled to rape and mutilate women and girl children, and want to "dirty" the females of their enemies. These men view women as property, not people.

We reject that view. Completely. A woman who has sex is not "dirty." And we reject forced pregnancy no matter how it occurs, accidentally or via violence.
