I have officially stepped back from wearing a smartwatch as my daily watch for the first time in nearly a decade. My wife bought me this as a 21st Anniversary present. ❤️

chidgey,
@chidgey@engineered.space avatar

@boiert Yeah I’m looking forward to having a watch that still works after 6 years 👍🏻

chidgey,
@chidgey@engineered.space avatar

@jeffcgd It’s a reasonably priced watch too for what you get 👍🏻

Yes! I’m returning to the States for a week or so in September. If you’d like to meet up I’m trying to gauge interest as to where and when. Details here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/arizona-2024-103650329

@evoterra @james Hi there! I’ve been a fan of your work for a while now, and really enjoyed your Podcast Pontifications ☺️

@chidgey How lovely! I’d love to meet up when you’re in Phoenix. Prescott will be a little cooler than down here, but there are plenty of cool (as in indoor, air conditioned) places to meet. I’m centrally located, so quite flexible!

After a very long time, I upgraded so many armour sets in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom before I finally decided to defeat Gannon. So it’s over. Finally. I dragged that out for a loooooooong time.

superdavey,

@chidgey I did the same yesterday. Funny timing.

@scottaw Hey Scott, Just doing a tidy up of Fediverse Cyou and the last post from your account there was Nov, 2022. Pretty sure you’re active on Social.lol these days so is it okay if I close out the old one? Let me know. Thanks.

chidgey,
@chidgey@engineered.space avatar

@scottwillsey Yeah. Sorry about that. Mona confused me when it was just trying to be helpful.

scottwillsey,
@scottwillsey@social.lol avatar

@chidgey no problem at all 😄 I couldn't figure out at first why it didn't actually @ me, which shows you how on top of it I am! 😂

We have a new manager at the company that wants to change the name of a document thinking that this alone will change other individuals’ behaviour.

jasonetheridge,

@chidgey Gods save us from new managers wanting to make their mark. The corporate equivalent of pissing on the furniture to declare ownership.

chidgey,
@chidgey@engineered.space avatar

@jasonetheridge You’re not wrong.

When I was in JB HiFi today, I tried a reMarkable 2 Paper Tablet. I have to admit it was pretty nice. The 2 week battery life would be amazing and it’s 5mm thick and weighs 400g. By comparison my 5th Gen iPad Air weighs 461g and is 6mm thick, but it displays colour and you can use it without a pen/stylus but it goes flat quickly. I get the distraction-free environment as an analogue for pen and paper but it’s an extravagance I think if you already have a tablet.

rusl,
@rusl@mstdn.social avatar

@chidgey My friend has a Remarkable tablet and gives it a thumbs up emoji. She’s a doctor and I think she uses it mostly for work, but I’m pretty sure I saw her using it to sketch building plans for a house renovation. I wouldn’t call her a tech gadget person, yet she enthusiastically loves it. She also has an iPad.

@js Wanted to randomly thank you again for creating the OP3 service. I’m adding the following to the TEN Homepage. Should be live later today. Just checking in but based on the list of Supporters the project is able to cover it’s expenses at this point?

chidgey,
@chidgey@engineered.space avatar

@js My interests are to spread the word about the project to hopefully get more support to ensure it can be self-sustaining. And yes, it’s funny how we value our time differently to if it was a paid J.O.B. job…

js,
@js@podcastindex.social avatar

@chidgey So true...

I did choose primitives deliberately to maximize reliability/availability trading off slightly higher costs in the beginning. And it's paid off so far at least on that axis: no matter what kind of unexpected global outage Cloudflare had over the last few years, I never lost or failed to save data - whereas if I would have gone with some of their other (cheaper) primitives, I would have.

Some of the people in the office have been keeping a record of weird things I’ve said out loud, so I discovered. Here’s some of them: "Shrug-a-doodle-doo" “Alarm rationalisation. Boy Howdy did we do that!” “Don't believe everything you think.” "BYO Attitude” “I don’t care about winning a pissing contest, I only care about being right.” I know I’m weird.

evanspw,
@evanspw@aus.social avatar

@chidgey Slip in a few juicy ones and see if they pop up on the list.
"Marketing is for morons from the far side of the moon"
"Everything rooted about engineering is down to beards"
"Management couldn't stack boxes in a 5 ton truck"

chidgey,
@chidgey@engineered.space avatar

@evanspw Nice 👍🏻

If you see your cars’ tyre spitting out metal strands…that’s bad right?

chidgey,
@chidgey@engineered.space avatar

@rusl I hadn’t come across the SeaGull model until you mentioned it. I hope they change their mind about bringing it to Australia - what we need is a better balance on the small-car end of the EV spectrum. Tesla are amazing but they’ve focused on larger vehicles across the board. That’s not what the world needs in totality. Plenty of city-dwellers don’t want/need that big a car.

chidgey,
@chidgey@engineered.space avatar

@rusl Truth is, I only got the Model 3 because it was the best Electric Car option in mid-2021 in Australia. If I was buying an EV now, I’m not sure I’d get one. It’s too wide making it annoying to park and 9 times out of 10 it’s just me in it, so it’s a waste of space inside. I used to drive a Honda Jazz for 8 years and I miss that some days.

Up to three pages of notes now for the next Causality. Weather here is finally cooling down at night with Autumn now upon us. Thank goodness. It’s been a wet, hot, humid Summer this year.

LonelyBob,

@chidgey Thanks for checking and the update. After you select “Display transcripts I provide” be sure to click Save. The UI on that change isn’t so obvious that it doesn’t automatically save. Also it takes a few hours or so for episodes to update, after making the change give it a day or so to see if Apple Podcasts switches to your transcript file.

chidgey,
@chidgey@engineered.space avatar

@LonelyBob Don’t worry I definitely saved it. My issue remains that there’s no option to not include a transcript unless you go episode by episode. Hence, Causality was 16 human curated Transcripts, now it’s a 2/3rd blend of AI crap as well. Then again, that’s only an issue if you’re using Apple Podcasts. If you pull from my RSS feed you’ll get the originals.

On any given topic, the more informed and knowledgable you are, generally more considered you are in your response since you appreciate the nuances of the topic. Conversely the less informed you are, the more decisive and direct you tend to be.

rusl,

@chidgey “Why don’t they just…..?” or “There’s an easy solution to that.”

Project Tapestry looks like an interesting concept. Craig hinted at this a year ago in the final Twitter-pocolypse but they’ve taken some time to flesh it out. Kickstarter is an interesting option but I suppose that worked for Project Phoenix so why not? Looks like it’s already got enough to be made. Nice :)

scottwillsey,
@scottwillsey@social.lol avatar

@chidgey I hope it makes it to the Mac client goal as well.
