One-off upgrade fees are more honest

@joshcalvetti Thanks. Thats's true, it can feel a little forced sometimes. Especially when you're not gaining any value from the updates.

@palmin @matt That makes sense. I've seen a similar model used on a few Mac apps as well.

chrishannah,

@fahrni @mike The best I’ve heard is @palmin’s implementation with Working Copy.

@matt You're right, scam probably isn't the best word. But yeah, it seems crazy that they seem to be allowed. And I would assume they would have to be effective?

chrishannah,
@chrishannah@fosstodon.org avatar

@matt Yeah, I'm sure there are a ton of edge cases, but it's a very tricky balance that developers and users have to deal with.

That sounds like a reasonable solution, considering what's available for them.

But you're right, I wonder how different the App Store would be if upgrade prices were supported. I'd like to think that there would be less of a dependency on subscriptions, which would probably mean a smaller amount of scam apps that rely on them.

    @kev I always found CleanMyMac to be good. Seemed to find all kinds of old cruft I had on my Mac.

    What blog look do you like the look of most: https://thedent.net/ or https://andynicolaides.micro.blog/ (assume the 2nd one didn’t have broken images).

    @andyn Haha, not being arsed is a very valid convern. In that case, I'd go with the option that makes blogging easier.

    @andyn I think I prefer the micro blog mostly, mainly the style and the layout. But (I can't think of what this is called) I do really like this section of the other blog:

    I feel like I need to play the Red Dead Redemption games at some point. I've constantly heard how good they are, and some recent clips on Instagram/YouTube has made me think now is the time.
    However, I'm not sure if I should play the original or jump ahead to the second game?

    @joshcalvetti Nice, thanks, at least I can always play the original afterwards!

    I just got referred to as a "Java dev" on a work call :sickmsn:

    chrishannah,
    @chrishannah@fosstodon.org avatar

    Firstly, I've written Swift, Java, Python, JavaScript, etc. in this role.

    But more importantly, because my team is filled with "Java devs", apparently we won't be able to cope with writing even the most minimal of TypeScript.

    Pure loser talk.

    @cdf1982 yeah, and it's literally a small script that would call a REST API, not a huge project.

    PSA Jedi: Survivor pre-loads have already begun for PC, and they start tonight on consoles.

    Actual launch is right at midnight, Thursday night. Excellent, and not always the case…drives me nuts when games don't release digitally until like noon the day they come out.

    @matt I might actually need to get another ssd to play this.

    I want to use the Obsidian Ghost Publish plugin, but because it doesn't embed the contents in a Markdown block, footnotes don't work. And the repository has now turned into a read-only archive. 😬

    chrishannah,
    @chrishannah@fosstodon.org avatar

    @matt Luckily, I think I can fix the problem in another way. The Markdown parser that is uses has a few plugins that can extend its functionality, and there's one for footnotes. So I just need to work out how to tie it all together and I should have a working fork.

    chrishannah,
    @chrishannah@fosstodon.org avatar

    I'm now trying to create my own fork of the plugin that works the way I expect. But I really have no idea what I'm doing with TypeScript and npm. 😅

    I can't say I was too bothered about the outcome of this potential merger, but this response looks a bit childish. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-65407005

    I've been experimenting with making my own forked version of the Obsidian Ghost Publish plugin most of the day, with the primary goal of supporting footnotes. I'm now at a point where the footnote content is being parsed and generated properly, but Ghost's conversion to mobiledoc format is stripping out all the useful link info. 😵

    I think the short term solution is to use another editor. I can't be bothered writing any more TypeScript.

    For instance, I just thought of making an OAuth 2 implementation.
