The wildest bag someone recommended from this post is the TomToc Navigator. It's 40L, but only weighs 2.8 lb, has water bottle holders, compression straps, great laptop/iPad compartment, and one massive clamshell bucket for clothes. And it's only $80, which concerningly cheap

If they used X-Pac or a nicer material it could be even lighter and more durable, add in stowable straps, would be an absolute slam dunk

@philipp Seems kinda gimicky to me imo, but they're in my blog post!

@mikeyp My worry is mostly long term, I've had some really nice cheap bags that after 3-4 years start to disintegrate, where I haven't had that with ones that cost a bit more, so I'm quite hesitant

@troy It looks really nice! My fear is more so like, 3 years from now what kinda shape it'll be in, have had bags in the past where they hold up great in the short term and then fall apart after a few years due to shoddy craftsmanship, and I ask a lot of travel bags

@mikeyp Aaahh so temptinggggg

@monorailtimes I'd love a Tom Bihn, they just have a weird aversion to having accessible water bottle holders unlike almost every other brand which is really weird. A Techonaut in a 35-40L size would be incredible though

@mitchkiah I'm already researching sewing machines ;_;

@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@Porgey I love the design of it, I just can't get past the weight, it weighs so much more than anything else on the market (even other bags that are considered heavy) so I can only assume it's made of wood

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@justin @monorailtimes Yeah that definitely looks like their best water bottle holder, I just wish the bag was 35-40 instead of 45 which feels just a bit too big for me

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@jdechko somewhere in my long winded article I mention that I think haha

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@Porgey the 30L one? Yeah a bit on the small side unfortunately, looking for right around 40L but under 3.5 lb

Sometimes I forget there was a period of television where new episodes of Community, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, and The Office all aired back to back on the same night

Choosing a travel backpack is really hard, and I still haven't found one I love, so mostly for my own reference I wrote a long post with thoughts on pretty much every travel backpack out there https://christianselig.com/2024/04/choosing-a-backpack-is-hard/

If you have other recommendations gimme

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@azizbawany I mention them in the post! Looks super functional, just not my personal style

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@chasehainey 25L is a bit small for travelling for over a week unfortunately. I do mention their X-Air in the post though

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@eiiot That would be a lot of work that maybe I will do but am not really looking to committing to at the moment haha

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@NotGoret @lokan I wish there were more videos of this! Looks like a spiffy bag, just scant on details. Not a super big fan of how it opens though, wish it opened all the way like a true clamshell

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@ObsoleteGinger I just wish there was more info on it, none of their videos really even show the main compartment, strange marketing

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@NotGoret @lokan They're super cool looking bags but I just wish they did a normal opening haha. Seems you're stuck between either a roll top or a half clamshell

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@ObsoleteGinger Oh okay that makes sense. I might take you up on that as I delve deeper, thank ya!

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@ents Ooooooo

@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@lokan @NotGoret Cheers, great reviews!

christianselig,

@joshwayne It's mostly just easy access, I like to be able to grab the laptop quickly at the airport to watch something or get some work done, but I'm not often grabbing t-shirts or something

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@ag Dang, that looks pretty nice, just not a big fan of roll tops as a way of gaining extra storage

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@gregmelnyk Looove him

christianselig,
@christianselig@mastodon.social avatar

@joshwayne Ah fair, I find in most of the bucket style bags if I just put my laptop on top of the pile of clothes and cubes it feels weirdly aggressive on the laptop (especially when trying to close a really stuffed bag), and if I put it on the bottom it's a pain to access. I'm really hoping Tom Bihn makes a Technonaut 40 with a good water bottle holder
