We’re at the point of virality where people are sharing my own article with me

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@ernie

I've had that happen lol

Not via virality so much as just someone going "clive clive check this out this is like the shit you talk about all the time"

Know any NYC students, or their parents?

The mayor closed the libraries on Sundays, and is set to close them Saturdays too -- citing budget constraints 📚

The budget's being debated right now!

So, if you live in NYC?

Here's a form that'll auto-send a letter to your city councillor telling them to vote to "keep the libraries open sundays": https://actionnetwork.org/letters/open-the-libraries-nyc/

Forward it to any students in NYC 🤘

Parents can use it too -- just rewrite the opening salutation to say "I'm a parent"

@druid

Man, in any sane universe the mayor would understand that well funded libraries and strong social services are what help to prevent crime in the first place

On TikTok and other digital platforms, there has lately been much ado about people who own a great number of books and — this is critical — have managed to stage them in a pleasing manner.

People of Mastodon!

I'm researching the growth of ebikes ...

... in cities around the US

I've talked to many people who love them!

But also want to include the perspective of folks who have concerns ...

... i.e. about the speed and weight of ebikes in accidents with pedestrians or other cyclists, and the like

If anyone has thoughts they wanna share, ping me! I'm all ears: clive@clivethompson.net

Pass this along if you know anyone else with perspective they want to share

@CathyTuttle

I knew that generally about parts of europe but don't think I knew it about the Netherlands specifically yet -- good to know!

and omg yes re: hilly cities

Seattle here in the US, and parts of San Franciso, are really really hard to navigate by regular bike

@clive@saturation.social avatar

@skyfaller

Yep -- same here on both counts!

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@Tribear

nope, not new at all -- first patents are back in 1895! And the current boom ushered in by lighter-weight lithium-ion barriers goes back to the late 00s

That's an intriguing way of defining the bike-ness of an ebike!

@lkanies

Roger that

This isn't a piece that's a jeremiad against ebikes, or which ignores the danger of cars

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@lkanies

yep, 100%

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@carrots

offering help on hills is really a big deal, agreed

It's why ebikes are the thing that appear to be getting a ton of folks riding who otherwise might never do so

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@admin @luis_in_brief

yikes, bikes of any sort (piloting by adults, at least) shouldn't be ridden on sidewalks at all! Way too dangerous to pedestrian

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@scokop

I'll check that out, thank you!

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@LabSpokane

Yep, I'm really impressed by how capable they are and how much they open up mobility for the people who ride 'em

It's infrastructure all the way down

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@strayhorse

Very cool story!!

So great that you've found it useful for all the shopping and errands!

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@strayhorse

Thank you!

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@sufficiency

Yep -- drivers who seem too willing to endanger cyclists are terrifying and incredibly dangerous

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@JKrotkov

Thank you!

clive,

@paninid @tim

Aha, that's such an interesting coinage -- not heard of it before! Thank you

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@wh0sthatd0g

gaaaah

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@Tribear

truly

those things really don't resemble "bicycles"

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@strayhorse

Right on

Also, you folks out in rural areas have much cleaner air for riding than we do here in Brooklyn

hack, cough

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@paninid @tim

cool cool
