you know what'd be really cool? if you could take a performance trace of your program in an IDE that integrates a debugger and profiler (e.g. Visual Studio), then feed the data back to the compiler to better inform inlining and codegen decisions.

UPDATE: I am informed that this is a thing! (profile-guided optimisation)

@gsuberland yes profile guided optimisation is kinda neet! I’m not sure how good the tooling is right now. I tried it on a hobby Rust ray tracer; tooling was a bit clunky, but it pretty much gave me a free 10% performance boost. Also Python can be built with PGO (not sure how many Linux distros ship with PGO built binaries tho)

@fasterthanlime it was also lovely to figure out that their "unifying receiver" is not in fact unifying, and the presenters still have their own receiver
