Different conservative groups "all disagree about who should be in charge, but they all agree that some people are ordained to rule, and that any 'artificial' attempt to overturn the 'natural' order throws society into chaos." — @pluralistic

(FWIW, I got my go-to definition of conservatism from an essay by Phil Agre: "Conservatism is the domination of society by an aristocracy.")

Send Later should be a built in option for every app that can send or post. Texting. Social media. All the things.

Can’t believe out of all the modern apps it’s just humble Mail that has this built in.

danfuzz,

@ethanschoonover Signal too. And the Mastodon API supports it, though not the official apps. (I use Tusky when I want to schedule a post.)

@SomaFMrusty @danfuzz TIL that when you charge a customer's card, and it is a Fancy one that gives them miles or some shit, the "interchange fee" that you, the merchant, pay is higher.

danfuzz,

@jwz @SomaFMrusty …and you're contractually prohibited from adjusting your price accordingly. Fun times!

danfuzz,

@jwz @SomaFMrusty You are thinking of Inovant, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Visa. I briefly worked for Visa via a sub-sub-contract through Inovant.

My observation was: Inovant suffers from conflicting incentives that impede the success of their owner organization (Visa per se). But perhaps that is by design, as it enables value extraction from the ownership one layer above that (the network banks).

Inovant is, as they say, where they hid the Rolls.

There’s a better name for this but the term escapes me: an extent of memory used to transfer between two threads. Thread B waits for Thread A to write N bytes into the buffer, A pauses while B copies those bytes into memory owned by B, B resets the byte count, returning control to A to copy more bytes.

danfuzz,

@isntitvacant "Circular buffer" (plus qualifiers like "shared" or "synchronized" as appropriate)?

So, I guess my next car is gonna record my phone screencasting to the center console and resell it to data aggregators, then? And I won't be able to opt out?

Is Hurricane Electric effectively an agent of the US government, e.g. a government-regulated monopoly? If so, they presumably have a First Amendment obligation to carry unfiltered traffic. If not, then AFAIC they have a moral obligation not to carry Nazi / hate group traffic, whether or not it originates from a direct customer.

@photomatt Hey I'd cheerfully pay something like that even though I'm not a WP user, just for long term hosting a static Web site.

danfuzz,

@timbray NB: https://permanent.org/ for an existing service in the same general space, run as a registered nonprofit. TLDR: $10 per GB stored in perpetuity.

I’ll say just this much about new social networking platforms: I am mostly using them to put a signpost in the dirt that says “hey! I’m on mastodon!”

danfuzz,

@isntitvacant I don't want to create an Instagram account and install a new app just to do that.

yanno, sometimes I think that node’s most important achievement wasn’t the creation of a js language platform, but the popularization of a cross-platform evented system interface with a design that rhymed with POSIX

danfuzz,

@isntitvacant Arguably one of my biggest problems with it recently is that it isn't quite transparently POSIX(ish) enough. (Fighting libuv which doesn't let me directly configure a server socket.)

danfuzz,

@isntitvacant It does kinda boil down to that.

Near as I can tell, the dominant libuv attitude is to not let developers make informed choices in such situations. Like, I am okay being Linux-specific for this particular bit of code… and I am, except in a way uglier and more precarious way than if libuv let me just set the muffin-loving bit.

Comcast is so terrible. Oh you can't cancel online. That'd be too convenient. You have to schedule a callback. In 2.5 hours... oh that failed... how about in 6.5 hours? I cannot wait to cancel and hope to never have to deal with this awful company again.

danfuzz,

@drahardja @swetland I trotted out "I'm moving to Iceland" to cut off an all-US company (home alarm company I "inherited" from a previous resident) from insisting that I leave the account in question active.

Love that my decision making on an Amazon order is now between products by HYSEYY, LVMVL, or GDLFF. I mean who knew that GDLFF was even still in business. I thought they'd been acquired by FLXLM.

danfuzz,

@Sandchigger @ethanschoonover Real trademarked brands at least, I bet:

"Brands like Pvendor, RIVMOUNT, FRETREE and MAJCF. Gloves emblazoned with names like Nertpow, SHSTFD, Joyoldelf, VBIGER and Bizzliz. Gloves with hundreds or even thousands of apparently positive reviews…

The FRETREE trademark, which was obtained in July 2019, lists 20 sorts of goods, including 'ice cream scoops,' 'animal-activated pet feeders' and 'camping grills,' but not gloves."

TLDR don't use Converso.

"The wild claims Converso makes on its website – the promises it makes about its app's security, plus the shade it throws on premier encryption tools [such as Signal] – are all provably false."
