Dude. This Orioles game is nuts. 9 runs this inning. Still no outs.

Every year I think to myself... next year MLB will figure out their streaming strategy and not make me go through terrible VPN hoops to watch a team I already give a couple of thousand dollars a year to (I have a ticket plan for my family).

I don't understand how they expect to keep a fan-base this way.

Nice to see the Os playing so well on opening day. Hope the fun continues this year.

MDX is fun because of how expressive you can make it. We had a blog post about a new way to create Postgres extensions with Zig. It includes samples of the Zig code and similar C code.

I like viewing code comparisons side by side, so I took 15 minutes to make a small component to add some syntax to our templates. It's why I like MDX, even if it comes with a lot of caveats (like React, discoverability of components is a pain). Works great when you need something extra.

We redesigned the @xata website. Feels a little more fun.

I think I've finally also completed the Docs Death Star I've always wanted. Next I'd like to start adding auth to it so the examples can reference your own databases.

I just bought a crokinole board after learning about it this morning. It's basically Canadian shuffleboard?

@stephenallinson I haven't even played it before and I'm already obsessed.

When will we see the first successful nostalgia act on the web? We're around 30-years of Internet culture at this point. The early years had a small audience, but each year that passes there will be more people that remember "the good Internet".

At some point an old brand / personality will be able to do a "come back tour" the same as Guns and Roses and capitalize on people's fond memories.

@billseipel I assume you meant this bit of history?

Once every year someone will see my name and bring up Twisted Sister :D

I can't look away. Something always draws me in.

🤔 CSS has been on my mind a lot lately (it’s a strange world), and seeing Carlton’s mention of the caniuse.com website/resource reminds me of how weird CSS standards are compared to everything else.

This makes me appreciate that when a new Python is released, we know what features we are getting based on a version number that runs everywhere instead of waiting for a half dozen browsers and platforms to get around to it and possibly catch up. https://fosstodon.org/@carlton/112048170845906865

davesnider,
@davesnider@social.davesnider.com avatar

@webology It used to be SOOOO much worse. Take heart that you're coming to this realization now and not in 2002 when I started.

CSS has always been about clever hacks pushing the system beyond what was imagined, but at least now the basics are covered.

These days Safari is the new IE.

@davesnider@social.davesnider.com avatar

@webology Oh I was on GeoCities (and tripod and angelfire!) then too, but CSS wasn't too common yet.

I'm just happy to see progress and movement from the CSS standards community. They are finally realizing vanilla wasn't enough, and adding in features we all were using from tool-kits.

I agree it's tough to keep up, but I'm excited!

Sharon Van Etten songs hit me in my jumblies. The last half of "Come Back" during the harmonies... my spine goes into reverb.

Nothing builds loyalty better than good customer service. I bought a fancy hammock stand from Kammok.com. Unfortunately it arrived with a missing part. I had a tracking number for a shipment of said part within 30 minutes of an email I sent about the issue.

It's getting near Spring. Go buy yourself a hammock and grab a frosty beverage.

Years ago I worked with @caroline and she had the best solution for dealing with needing to jump away from a branch to work on a quick fix.

She kept two copies of the code on her computer. Rather than stash, or commit to her branch, she just moved to the copy she wasn't using and worked quickly from there.

My eight year son has unsurprisingly gotten really into Halo since I introduced it to him.

Does anyone know if the novels are any good? He burned through the entire Percy Jackson series in two months so I need to find something to keep him reading. Otherwise I was thinking of getting him into Redwall.

In which I propose the "can you cry while using it?" test to assess whether or not real live humans were centered in the design of a given piece of technology: https://aaadaaam.com/notes/the-inhuman-computer/

davesnider,
@davesnider@social.davesnider.com avatar

@aaadaaam You sort of mention this at the end, which is that this is inherent in all of these products at the moment, not just from Apple.

I agree with all of your problem statements. At the same time, I think good design doesn't magically appear. It takes iteration, sometimes over long periods. Sometimes that happens with released products that maybe aren't quite ready.

Barring the release progression, does AR / VR have promise? Or are you saying you're fundamentally against the premise?

davesnider,
@davesnider@social.davesnider.com avatar

@aaadaaam I say this being an owner of a Quest 3, who previously owned other VR tech. I think it's more a use case problem.

I use VR to pretend like I'm flying in a plane in MSFS 2020, not as a replacement for my computer as a creation mechanism. For me, it's a tool, and a good one for a couple niche purposes.

Eventually, I think the hardware will get better and those niche use cases might expand. But for now? They are toys. I think the problem with apple is how they are marketing it.

davesnider,
@davesnider@social.davesnider.com avatar

@aaadaaam Yeah. I'm skeptical of general usage as well. Most people don't even like wearing glasses, forget VR devices. It'll likely take a different approach to get that part right.

Anyways, good read!

The Garth Nix Abhorsen books are so good. I've been reading them to my 10 year old daughter over the past year. Great lead characters for girls of that age. Really surprised those books don't get recommended often for YA.

Prolly has something to do with the necromancy.
