@latte every time Supergiant makes a new game I think "surely they can't make another perfect game" and then yes, completely immaculate, no notes.

I am unreasonably proud of my sub-15 minute top clear time in Hades.

Aw beans, your boy blogged about design systems again but this time heโ€™s the problem https://robinrendle.com/notes/the-other-side/

aaadaaam,
@aaadaaam@mastodon.social avatar

@fonts love this. Good UI should have one offs and exceptions; they're the things that make a UI feel seamless instead of looking like a bunch of off the shelf parts stuck together.

Even LEGO knows and accepts this. Buy a kit and it's 80% standard bricks and 20% weird one-offs that sell the illusion.

Ideally, design systems are a set of solutions, not a set of rules.

@davesnider how they're marketing / their vision is exactly the problem.

I strongly agree with you that iteration is an important part of getting to "good". But (IMO) there's no hardware or software iteration here that makes their vision not flawed.

FWIW, I think AR approaches like the Frame glasses I linked to avoid the majority of conceptual and ergonomic pitfalls. Generally I think "goggle-style" VR/AR is a dead end as a general purpose computing device.

A front-end web developer just starting outโ€”in order to feel most aligned with the industry and apply for the best jobsโ€”will most likely start in a tool-chain that is not aligned with web standards.

In some cases these tools are actively hostile to web standards.

How do we begin to dig ourselves out of this mess?

aaadaaam,
@aaadaaam@mastodon.social avatar

@zachleat I think about this a lot both with development work and designing for the web. The question on my mind is if there's even a place where someone could learn a modern, platform-centric approach in a holistic way?

aaadaaam,
@aaadaaam@mastodon.social avatar

@sarajw @zachleat these are all better answers than what I've had!

I think the thing I'm getting at is that React has super polished, outcome focused (here's what you need to know to get a job / build things people will pay for) courseware like https://react.gg and the platform-centric approach doesn't. If employers want React and React has an easier on-ramp then new folks are going to pick it.

(I feel like I'm convincing myself to make courseware oh no)

The best feature of Mastodon is also the one that surely limits its stickiness and growthโ€”no algorithmic feeds.

I love that I can run out of content here, because it encourages me to go do something else. But thatโ€™s probably bad for Mastodon?

aaadaaam,
@aaadaaam@mastodon.social avatar

@jonasdowney eh, itโ€™s only bad for Mastodon if you accept the premise that they need to hit Xitter or Threads numbers, or otherwise โ€œwinโ€ the space. Considering they donโ€™t make money from ads, Iโ€™m not sure either of those things are true.

aaadaaam,
@aaadaaam@mastodon.social avatar

@jonasdowney no question that thereโ€™s waaaaay more friction getting started here than something algo driven, but Iโ€™d characterize it more as a trade off than a problem. Like, growing my own food is super high friction, but the result is much more satisfying vs the instant gratification route. Subjective opinion of course!

๐Ÿ“ Feels like โ€œthe case for design engineers" is a series I could write more and more of (selfishly, it's mostly an attempt at a rationale for my own existence ha) because a lot of companies are just like โ€œlol, why would we want someone who can design in figma and write code?โ€

aaadaaam,
@aaadaaam@mastodon.social avatar

@jimniels great post. At the end of the day, someone involved has to have competency designing in the medium of delivery. If you don't, you're signing up for spec hell, inferior results, or both.

Really getting into reusable lately, incl. this one I worked over the last week for the new thi.ng website: a WebGL based image transition (via displacement mapping), primarily using https://thi.ng/shader-ast & http://thi.ng/webgl...

https://demo.thi.ng/umbrella/webgl-transition/

  • the transition is currently linked to mouse over or touch events, but will be more flexible
  • the layout is responsive (single column on mobile, two columns on larger screens)
  • some of the displacement map images were created with https://shadergraph.thi.ng

(cc @Yura)

Short screen recording of the linked example showing a grid of 4 images and the displacment distortions/transitions when the mouse is moved over each image
