ME: hm I should make one (1) change to my programmable keyboard.

30 MINUTES LATER: well, my random weird devicemapper issue went away after uninstalling/reinstalling docker and rebooting a few times, but now docker seems to require root, when it didn't before? wtf

Computers may have been a mistake. (Also, it's amazing how far my desire to tinker with my setup has plummeted now that the community is splintering.)

@bitprophet I was bulk updating a bunch of small servers last night, which included a few DO boxes.

I had one of those oh shit moments while I was upgrading the box to get Tailscale updated. Thankfully, everything was fine, but I thought I would lose access while the box took a minute to respond.

@ThePSF Hey, when is PSF Member Lunch?

The topic came up, and only one person out of eight (including your next PyCon US Chair) didn't get one. I didn't have it either. We also looked on the schedule and didn't see it?

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@ThePSF Someone on the call passed the secret code.

This is a really confusing and frustrating process, even when you know it's going on. It sounds like a ton of people are getting left out for lack of knowing about it.

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@ThePSF thank you. We got it worked out last night, but my concern is that so many people won't know about it because they aren't on the forum and don't know about the private mailing list to be a part of it.

I passed this along to the other people who asked. Someone said the code was maxed out after a few of us used it last night. I did not double-check, but I assume you are on that.

My new Framework laptop arrived! It was very easy to put together, although it turns out i need different ports than what I originally ordered. Luckily, I can just order additional ones!

The inside of the laptop is lots of components each labeled with their QR code

I upgraded my GL.iNet GL-MT3000 travel router last week because they added Tailscale support via a plugin. Thatโ€™s a nice perk for hotel stays and being able to auto-connect/use with an exit node every device I would typically use at home that Iโ€™m carrying with me.

Mastodon filters are really what sells me on the platform.

Earlier today, I created a "paywall" filter to label news websites with a paywall label, so I can skip over them more easily.

Creating the 'paywall' filter brought back memories of the early days of Twitter, when users created hashtags before Twitter introduced UI support for them.

I have dozens of filter categories which are nice to take the edge off either temporarily or forever.

@onelson that's one of my favorite parts of summer is when it's homemade pickle season.

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@onelson I remember growing up and thinking they were terrible. Then ~10 years ago, a friend made some spicy pickles, and I got hooked. Like on the wasabi scale, but so hot your eyes water when you eat them. I don't go for the hot ones anymore, but you can make fresh, homemade pickles in ~30 minutes or a weekend if you want.

@onelson Looking good. How was it?

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@onelson Fair. Mayo is fine. I tried it once, but I wasn't a fan because it changes the flavor profile.

That said, I had a fried egg sandwich this morning with mayo and it was tasty AF.

I am still setting up my new laptop, I'm taking my time and also not trying to be overwhelmed by getting a proper dotfiles repo setup.

Three questions that come to mind:

  1. Any recommendations for dealing with credentials (typically some form of API key) that live in config files that I would want to live in my dotfiles repo

  2. Similarly for transferring SSH keys.

  3. What do mac users do for local files that aren't in some form of git repo (pdfs, office files, etc) Migration Assistant?

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@nanorepublica I'm using 1Password for the SSH bits and storing auth keys. Their CLI can make storing ENV values/configs easier too.

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@nanorepublica their cli looks promising: https://bitwarden.com/help/cli/

SSH + Git signing works with 1password and the op-cli is nice to script against for a team.

My only nitpick is my newer machines are only using 1password for SSH keys but it uses the bio key as a default confirmation.

This works wonderfully unless I'm remote and then I can't put my thumb on the keyboard.

I'm mentioning this because it's worth having a portable/backup SSH on each machine, too.

WTF, CC?

You honestly argue that the content I put out under the International version of CC-BY-SA can be snarfed up by an LLM because of the "fair use" doctrine that's specifically USian, rendering the licence conditions moot?

https://creativecommons.org/2023/02/17/fair-use-training-generative-ai/

webology,
@webology@mastodon.social avatar

@xahteiwi @carlton At its core, attribution is 90% of my gripe about all this. It's the one part all licenses mostly get right, and it's totally glossed over and ignored.
