OG blogger, podcaster, developed first apps in many categories. Old enough to know better. It's even worse than it appears.

Disagree with @semaforben"s setup for his interview with Joe Kahn. We who criticize The Times don't want it to help Biden win. We want it to fully report on what is at stake with the rise of fascism in the US and to report fairly on Biden.

@jeffjarvis @semaforben

It was a total softball.

No one thinks that should be his job.

Reporting on opinion polls is weak news.

If it’s news at all.

I wonder if anyone has thought of working with ChatGPT or Meta.ai to create a Busy Developer's Guide to ActivityPub? Here's the prompt. "I want to write a simple bridge between my writing app and any app that runs in the Fediverse, using only ActivityPub. The operations are basically those of the MetaWeblog API, create a post, update a post. Just to start. How should it handle identity? I work in Node.js.”

Journalism is making the same mistake with AI that they made with bloggers. They jumped to the incorrect conclusion that we were trying to do what they do.

Can we please have a nice slogan we can chant at rallies saying that we think that women owning their own bodies is at least as important as everyone being armed to the teeth so they can shoot their dogs.

What software/website do you use to make transcripts for podcasts?

I don't know how you feel but I'm tired of people using the term "podcast" when I can't find it at the place where I get my podcasts. You'd think by now they'd drop the pretense that they're podcasts. This is something the users could fix. Because eventually the big companies will own all the podcasts just like they own all the other kinds of news.

Today's blogrolls are more like feed readers than the old blogrolls of the 00's.

My blogroll has all the best sources, and they update slowly enough that I can keep up with all of them.

Good morning everybody!

Hope you're having a lovely Sunday wherever you are.

PS: With a friendly h/t to people who are already experiencing Monday.

When I say there's more work to do, and that the model we've been using for the social web, pioneered by Twitter and before that the blogosphere, is not the right model for "working together."

What we think of as community is mostly spam.

Got my FeedLand feeds on my blog using the new plugin:

Thanks @davew

I won't believe the NYT has any integrity until they let people criticize them on their op-ed page.

When you really have federation no one needs to hype it, people don't even realize it because things just work the way you expect them to.

Every time I hear "Where ever you get your podcasts," I'm reminded of how well that worked. 😀

Trump tried to overthrow the government. All the hair-splitting by the Supreme Court says that our country has no will to protect itself. President Xi of China was right, we don't have what it takes to survive.

This just popped up on the screen.

Excellent news. ChatGPT isn't resting on its laurels.

Remember the German man who died with 70,000 books in his house? Zeit Online tried to find out who he was through them and could not learn much except that he was obsessed with the work of writer Arno Schmidt.

Google is a strangler fig, in the long term its only goal is to kill the World Wide Web.

First they help you find good content, so people visit and use and enjoy and participate in good web sites.

Then they insist on scraping every piece of value they can, and presenting it to the user such that they never have to visit the websites at all.

Then the websites die, having been choked to death by the strangler fig, and people blame the websites for dying, not the strangler who bled them dry.

davew,

@notabene @secretgeek

impossible to know why.

might just be this -- they don't care and maybe it would take some effort to protect the web.

or they only see things from their own point of view, and they weren't creating sites 25 years ago they can't relate.

I've been contributing to open source projects for 20+ years, and a key goal of those contributions has always been to save other developers time and help them be more productive

I worry that LLMs are going to reduce job opportunities by making people who learn to effectively use them much more productive

I never worried about that for a second with my open source work. These two issues feel very different to me, but I'm having trouble articulating exactly why

things are changing so fast now it's hard to say which of our cherished beliefs are obsolete now. some days i think they're all gone now and it's a totally new reality.

i know that I have a very powerful tool that if I had it when I started programming at 18 would have meant my career would have been vastly different.

the things i thought were amazing are today ho hum. it's good, it means our work was successful. :-)
