Booked a plane from Amsterdam to Berlin and after realising what an 1hr+ ordeal it is to get into the city from BER immediately regret not taking the train.

@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@alper FEX takes you an hour to Mitte?!

(I will admit we’re a bit spoiled being five minutes walk from Ostkreuz, if the timing’s lucky I can be plane-door to front-door in under 40 mins.)

"Randomized trials cannot address all causal questions of importance in medicine and health policy and may have limited generalizability; thus, investigators may need to use observational studies as a source of evidence to address causal questions. The challenge, then, is to balance the importance of addressing the causal questions for which observational studies are needed with caution regarding the reliance on strong assumptions to support causal conclusions."

A challenge of our time truly

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@grimalkina This might be really dumb or something that’s already being done but is it possible to separate the statistics part and the science part? Like, the scientist comes up with the hypothesis and the experimental design and makes the observations, then collaborates with a statistician who crunches the numbers? Hell, maybe even assign a statistician to the scientist to ensure they’re disinterested in the outcome.

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@grimalkina I agree outsourcing sounds like a terrible model. I more had in mind the “balanced team” approach we used at Pivotal Labs where engineers, designers and product managers worked together daily—often pairing across disciplines—in service of the project. I’m more interested in the things a scientist doesn’t find in the data (because they find the stats painful and want to get back to “the science”) than the p-hacking to get the result they thought they should.

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@grimalkina I suppose it’s Sturgeon’s Law, 90% of everything is crap like any other field. Once in a while you get a team who fights against the overwhelming external incentives and engineers themselves an environment where everyone is respected and valued and they can do great work.

interesting that "portable computer with a really good keyboard and a really good battery life" doesn't exist since the two trends went in opposite directions

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@jk The iPad Magic Keyboard is pretty good though, if you count the (current) MacBook range keyboards as “pretty good”.

Trying out ordering non-brand name items from Aliexpress, since I figure I may as well cut out the middleman (Amazon) that’s not actually providing any value.

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@alpha I’ve done it. Shipping takes a little longer and you can just give up on the idea of returns, but for ¼ of the price it’s mostly worth the risk.

@Dr_Bombay 55 according to the headline not 65, “of natural causes”? That is way too young for natural causes.

@alpha I was going to wait for this year’s model (new case/band design?) but then I found myself in the Apple Store due to some hardware issues and came out with an Ultra 2. No regrets.

danhon, to random

Not clear what was internally driving Sonos' release of a clearly not-minimally-viable-product from the point of view of its users. What vreasons might they have had for pushing this release out now and sticking to a high-level "we need to rearchitect so we're iterating and will bring it back".

Why not wait until it's ready?

I may not agree with their decision after knowing all the information, but at least hopefully there's a better reason than the dogma of ship now and improve over time.

Turns out, an "optimization" I made in the desert in the middle of the night in a dust storm dropped the Cuddlefish's LED controllers from 50 fps to 25 fps. Good thing I'm re-testing this stuff, and in a place with such luxuries as "running water" and "walls" to boot!

(It was a scheduling conflict between two realtime tasks, one of which does a big SPI transfer without yielding or using DMA because I was in a hurry. They clashed just enough that I dropped every other frame.)

ADHD is great for being dropped into a crisis situation, consuming all the documentation, talking to everyone, and then synthesizing the gestalt back in a format useful to exec leadership and their board, I think?

Or it's just the adhd is comorbid with me being me?

OK this power bank actually looks useful. Anyone know of anything similar, with quickly & easily swappable 21700/20700/18650 cells, without the "tactical" BS? 😆

Another weak signal supporting my contention that I am just too old or not quite rich enough to never have to die. Any middle class person a decade younger than me or someone my age with fuck-you money will live forever as long as they don’t get hit by a bus.

@BenAveling Fair point. But I’m still optimistic that (physically, at least) “ageing” is unnecessary and at some point we’ll work out how to turn it off. I just hope that point is after Murdoch dies.

I understand the advice to build a website for your thing rather than just using a Facebook page, and boy do I ever agree with every criticism of the Facebook path.

But...

From the standpoint of a non-technical independent business owner, I imagine that they don't feel particularly better or worse between the two common situations: Beholden to and constrained by Mark Zuckerberg versus beholden to and constrained by a freelance web dev/designer.

ratkins,
@ratkins@mastodon.social avatar

@cammerman @jchyip Amen. Facebook is testament to our (technologists) failure.
