I am a relatively-new #NHL fan (I am ashamed since I am from MN), & am wondering if someone could explain why the #mnWild bought out Parise & Suter and what exactly that means. Is it true that they could play for another team & the Wild are on the hook for their salaries, or is it just they are paid not the be on the Wild & if they sign somewhere else it is all gravy. What is the difference between a buyout & putting a player on waivers?

@eddeeMN @nhl @hockey buyouts are a way for teams to free up salary cap room typically constrained from massive longterm contracts for players who were over valued at the time of signing. The player in return gets paid a portion of what they were promised but to essentially do nothing. They can sign with other teams after being bought out.

Billionaire sports team owners prey on the love that fans have for their favorite teams.

Sadly, they often use it as leverage to extract money from the public for stadium deals.

And if we don’t play ball, they’ll take our favorite teams away.
