advice please - is there a way I can tell if our Telstra mobile hotspot, which we use for solar monitoring at the holiday house, is online? I know a MAC address for the solar inverter, and the ‘telephone number’ for the hotspot itself, but I don’t have the IP address. I tried sending an SMS to the hotspot but it didn’t report if it ‘received’ it. Is there a way to ping it with that little information?

david,
@david@bne.social avatar

@anathema_device Not without having set something up first I think. And the hotspot would need to be attached to a computer for what I am thinking to work, rather than a standalone unit (think USB dongle).
IIRC the standalone hotspots aren't particularly configurable.
If it were a USB type, say plugged in to a raspberry pi or similar, you could register for a dynamic DNS account (eg on dyn.com or other provider) and then you'd have a DNS name to ping (and resolve to an IP).

david,
@david@bne.social avatar

@anathema_device I guess first thing to check, have you run out of data? Is the bill paid? But after that, yeah sounds like a drive.

Okay, I’m back. Sort of. I’m suffering from back pain from hell, so touching grass is almost impossible right now, but doomscrolling has lost a lot of its appeal even with just a few days off.

You’ll probably see fewer posts from me. I’ve decided reposts are probably not worth it since I figure most people have them turned off.

I really don’t know why I’m telling you all this since I’m not a train and you don’t need to know my schedule :)

david,

@anathema_device BUT, we all go Toot Toot!

Maybe we are trains... 🤔

@potatochipwatch

david,
@david@bne.social avatar

@ariel @potatochipwatch In all but the Chilli, where Kettle does a decently spicy chilli, and Red Rock is tasty, but not spicy.

When I lived in Toowoomba, I spent little time at Clifford Gardens, and now having visited it twice to do shopping while staying in the Bunyas, I’m convinced the place is just fucking cursed. We both got completely lost, and my Apple Maps ‘find my car’ navigation had me walking around and around the damn thing to the point of exhaustion.

Never again! Begone, foul centre!

david,
@david@bne.social avatar

@anathema_device That was my "local" shopping centre when I lived in Toowoomba. (way way back in the late 90's)

I am as uninterested in the SuperBowl as I am in the Melbourne Cup, but but while there may be injuries to dumb animals in both cases, at least the footballers consent to it.

But it’s* still a fucking dumb way to amuse yourself.

I want to upgrade our TV from the existing 1080 x 720p, and I have 2 questions:

  1. Does anyone want a 1080 x 720p Sony Bravia TV (No stand, currently wall mounted)? Free to collect, can drop off if you have limited transport, and might pay for a stand if you need one and are cash poor :)

  2. Can anyone advise me what brand and model (50” max prolly, limited space) we should get? Not looking to spend $1000s. Choice seems to be between LG, Samsung, and Sony. All opinions gratefully received :)

david,
@david@bne.social avatar

@anathema_device I gave up on a television years ago. Bought a 1920x1080 projector and it's served the purpose perfectly (BenQ in case you're wondering).

Today, I'd go a 4k projector, assuming you have a white/neutral wall to project on.

david,
@david@bne.social avatar

@anathema_device Having said that, we don't watch actual TV, so if you do, that won't solve your problem.

Since 9pm or so last night, when the rain started, we have had 165mm of rain. Had a disturbed night, some funny gurgling noises I couldn’t identify, and then a cat determined to wake me up at 5.30am. That’s when I discovered we had a partly flooded sunroom :(

Towels, fans, dealing with it. Rain probably going to hang around another couple of hours. Then as soon as it dries out, we’ll have to renew the sealant under the metal frames in that room - which we use a lot (our real living room).

david,
@david@bne.social avatar

@anathema_device We've woken to a small puddle inside. Looks like we need to get the roof cleaned of leaves again.
