Is anyone aware of any programs that have been tried that are longer than the common, relatively short 0.5-2 day workshops?

I'm thinking of more spread out training such as an hour/week over 3 months or something along those lines.

Specifically considering things like software best practice, git etc.

I'd like to learn from others whether this has been tried, whether it works and whether it's tenable in research.

I've been teaching git through carpentries (and other) workshops and whilst I think some learners will take the training and move on to self learning, I'd like to be able to support those for whom some more interactive long-term support would be beneficial.

I've finally got around to making a template for presentations in Quarto with automated building and hosting on GitHub, in case someone else finds it useful! https://github.com/davidwilby/quarto-presentation-template/

Has anyone tried asserting "non-religious" beliefs with their employer?

For instance environmental or ethical viewpoints.

I'm thinking of examples like:

  • Choosing not to fly to a conference and travel by less CO2 intensive but more (financially) costly means.

  • Choosing not to use a particular service because of their unethical use of data? Or the organisation's unethical treatment of employees?

Employers generally must respect religious beliefs but what about non-religious views?

@travisfw It would be interesting to know whether an employer would be held to respecting the views of humanism and whether this idea could be applied in practice.

I just read @brodriguesco article on open source as a hard requirement for reproducibility from last year: https://www.r-bloggers.com/2022/11/open-source-is-a-hard-requirement-for-reproducibility/
(Thanks @nshephard for the share!)

It prompted me to write down some thoughts that have been living in my head on whether in is even possible or a worthwhile goal: https://reproduciblematlab.github.io/blog/posts/2023-07-10-can-matlab-be-reproducible/

TLDR: just read the blog, it's not that long (for once) - 3 minute read :D

Can any open research experts help me to educate myself?

I'm interested in a couple of questions right now:

  1. How good is adoption of open research practices and is it/how fast is it growing?

  2. What's the opinion (if any) on publishing/disseminating outside of journals?
