Last December we published a paper in the "Datasets and Benchmarks" track at NeurIPS 2023, detailing some of our ideas of how @renku could used for a more sustainable practice around data sets in data science, machine learning and beyond. It was quite well received, earning a "spotlight" acceptance! 🎉 More details here: https://blog.renkulab.io/neurips-2023

Nice to see Cambridge University Libraries urge the use of open (non-proprietary) file formats:

"...we need to make sure the data files can be found and used by anyone at any time, forever. Ideally, this means using open file formats where possible..."

Researchers solving a big ethical and research problem, and develop an animal free cell culture medium. Then giving away the result for free for all to use. I’m amazed and happy. There are people who try to solve things rather than just continue as usual or say that others should do something. With all the negative things going on this is surely an antidote. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37396848/

The academic journal publishing system sure feels all too often a bit like a sinking boat. We have many leaks, e.g.:

  • a reproducibility leak
  • an affordability leak
  • a functionality leak
  • a data leak
  • a code leak
  • an interoperability leak
  • a discoverability leak
  • a peer-review leak
  • a long-term preservation leak
  • a link rot leak
  • an evaluation/assessment leak
  • a data visualization leak
    etc.

Might work well alongside university- based open publishing models. (Shift the money we pay to the corporate publishers over to paying for a publishing platform. Most of the important work is already done by academics anyway - research, review, even editing.)
