Issue 2095 of The Sizzle just left my mail server!

Today's headlines:

  • Google's AI answer bot is very dumb, laughable actually

  • iFixit cracks the shits with Samsung and Spotify's 2-yo Car Thing is already e-waste

  • The Daylight DC-1 is an e-ink style tablet that'll do 60-120fps

  • Banning kids under 16 from social media is a dumb idea and people smarter than me agree

And the following stuff is on sale thanks to OzBargain:

  • Cheap Lebara SIM, PlayStation Plus, Moto G54 phone, Samsung 256GB microSD

I have a shitload more stuff to flog this weekend. Going through the house finding all the tech stuff I have that I don't really use much. Probably $5k worth of gear. I have a filthy shopping habit.

@jpm bacchus marsh still has the sole kebab place that i once saw cutting their toenails at the counter, so can't eat there anymore

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@decryption fair. You’d make a killing with a charcoal pit kebab cooker in the back of a truck in the outer west.

menz,
@menz@mastodon.social avatar

@decryption May as well enjoy it while you still use a phone with a SIM card slot

decryption,
@decryption@aus.social avatar

@menz soon they'll get rid of the USB port

@decryption@aus.social avatar

also eSIMs are a mistake for your primary phone number - making your phone number beholden to an app?? bad idea, good for burner/travel numbers though

decryption,
@decryption@aus.social avatar

passkeys fall into the same trap as eSIMs - yes in theory they're good but the companies involved make it more painful than it needs to be

CorruptDropbear,

@decryption physical passkeys or software passkeys?

@decryption@aus.social avatar

google makes it way too hard to backup your google photos library - i should really use something else, but it works so damn well

78zeros,
@78zeros@aus.social avatar

@decryption I’ve been looking at setting up an Immich instance and migrating my photos from the various places they exist to it. Hate that part of keeping you as a customer on these services is the difficulty of leaving. Surely providing a compelling product is sufficient?
