I’m having to join the morning push into Yokohama and was not expecting the trains to be as crushed as central Tokyo.

I was not correct about that assumption! I am now Elizabeth in 2D.

@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

I cannot put my feet flat on the floor 😳 Not cool, people.

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@WataruTenkawa My phone definitely isn’t able to go back in my pocket, that’s for sure 😅

elizabethtasker,

Changed trains and life has improved! Or at least, become more flat footed and stable… 😂

I now have a seat. Wild.

#EPSC (Europlanet Science Congress) is being held hybrid this year, and has an exciting program that includes a session on using new tools such as #VR in planetary science outreach.

But... it's 50 Euro per abstract submission, with no guarantee of acceptance. That's a fairly big punch when the Japanese yen is super weak.

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@YetAnotherGeekGuy It does take considerable time to review abstracts and put together the program. But usually, I'd expect any payment for that to come from the registration fee.

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@nab26 @YetAnotherGeekGuy I’m honestly not sure. It would be refreshing if the reviewers were offered some compensation, but I do agree it’s unusual.

Look, this is pretty much how "Day of the Triffids" started, people. Don't you forget that.

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@kaffando Exactly!! I'm very sad it's not visible from Tokyo. But also wondering what I have in my kitchen that could cut down the doom of civilisation 🤣

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@conflummoxed fortunately (or really, sadly) we didn’t see anything in Tokyo!

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@coprolite9000 and so it begins…

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@conflummoxed the big question is whether you'll still have sight in the morning, or if you will now be triffid feed!

I apparently put this seat hotspot on sideways (a function that lets your avatar "sit" in a chair).

But also. Mood.

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@conflummoxed There are many evenings when I "become the couch"!

Thank you to the store checkout assistant who dived into the box of discarded receipts because he saw I'd dropped a 1 yen coin from my change in there with my receipt.

Truthfully, not particularly necessary, but I appreciate the service 😂

Today.... we're simplifying this ceiling light! This is about 33,000 polygons, but (being a ceiling light) you never stand close enough to really examine the detail.

By creating the vertical notches with a texture, I think I can re-create this with about 1,500 polys. My pre-textured shape is the grey clone above the original.

I just hope it casts similar light shadows (which are quite cool).

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

While I'm procrastinating baking the textures and transferring to Unity, here is the finish light fixture in #Blender3d! Left (with a questionable design with intersecting shades) is the original with over 100,000 polys for the 3 lights. My new version uses textures to create the vertical slatting and uses less than 4,000 polys in total plus... a bit more physics 😅

The same three fittings, but this time models I created. They look very similar, but the fittings no longer intersect. Peering closely, you can probably tell the pattern of vertical bars on the fitting is now a texture (picture) but it's not obvious and these will be suspended up high in the virtual room.

A quick box model this morning in #blender3d! Anyone recognise the shape?

It needs to be as low poly as possible (for #VR), and the circles do look a bit blocky. I was thinking of creating a high resolution version, baking the normals, and using these for the blocky version.

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@olm_e Interesting! I did not realise that anything that wasn't obviously part of the mesh would be reflected in the normal, without the use of a normal map.

I've just checked the result in VR and works brilliantly: looks a whole lot better. Thanks so much again!

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

Y'all failed! But to be fair, I didn't really think you'd get it 🤣

It's actually a 3D version of the logo for @futuremeetings, which is the group I work with for designing better online event spaces for academia.

Here's a version coloured in (which took me more time than I care to admit....)

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@conflummoxed A lot of people made that guess!

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@SaguaroLynx Oh cool!!

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@grb090423 @futuremeetings But NOW you might remember it 😂

@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

I'm trying to create a low-poly version of this mesh for a light (left-hand image) by cage baking the normal in

I don't think... I can get it better than the image on the right. But would love to hear if there's a way to mimic a mesh more convincingly.

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@coprolite9000 I admit.... I've (almost) so far used the automatic blender tools for UV unwrap! But I sense I may be reaching my limit with that and will have to embrace drawing my own seams! But it seems so damn fiddly....

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@coprolite9000 These are great tips -- thank you!
