Has anyone ever gotten into the shower in their clothes because they didn't want to be cold and naked for that brief period before the hot water hits?

(I honestly considered whether "soaking wet but warm clothes" would be the lesser sensory evil tonight.)

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@Cassandra No but this is a big part of why I bathe any time I'm not stuck to suffer with only a shower stall available.

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@Cassandra The bathroom's at a decent temperature so since the water can already be just right by the time one gets into a bath, naked's not that bad without cold.

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@Cassandra The rest of the reason is that I have issues with water running down my face that it's much harder to minimize in the shower.

#Autistic buddies. Lend me your ears. I'm in somewhat of a quandry.

I am a #Patreon for a well known and respected #Autism YouTube account.

But for some months now he's not been producing anything nor communicating with anyone (at least not on the social media platforms I frequent)

I previously cancelled my patreon and later resubscribed when he returned but he's gone off again.

I don't want to just unsub as I do want to support him.. but that said....

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@petelittle1970 @actuallyautistic Cut your losses. If it's been several months of literally nothing, you've given them plenty of slack.

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@Aerliss @petelittle1970 @actuallyautistic Yeah, I think I was trying to soften it a little but what I was thinking is that Patreon is not a Go Fund Me. Every one that I've ever been part of has generally involved either content in the Patreon that's supposed to be delivered on a specific schedule or a YouTube channel or podcast that's supposed to be released on a specific schedule. I've usually been dealing with things that are supposed to be updated at least monthly, so I'll give them two.

@sebwhatever @actuallyautistic Yesterday I read Cocktails and Chloroform by Kelley Armstrong, a novella in her time travel mystery series.

Anyone else sometimes merge the concepts of 2 famous people into 1 - so that when you are confronted with the fact that these 2 people (with different names & histories) are indeed different, you are so shocked it's hard to take in?

Eg I merged Al Pacino & Dustin Hoffman into 1 idea accessed via 2 names. But they are different!!! 🤯

I do this a lot & with other types of entity too e.g. 2 supermarket chains with different names & logos got merged.

Bizarre.

estellechauvelin,

@FrightenedRat @actuallyautistic I haven't done that there are three or sometimes four different actors who professionally use three names that, even though I know they're different people, my memory can never call up more than two at a time. David Hyde Pierce, Neil Patrick Harris, and... okay whoever the third one is, that's the one who's missing right now.

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@FrightenedRat @actuallyautistic Sometimes David Ogden Stiers will get in there and butt somebody else out of my consciousness, too, but he's not one of the main three.

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@FrightenedRat @actuallyautistic If/when I come up with the third one I'll update.

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@FrightenedRat @actuallyautistic It might be Philip Seymour Hoffman. Not sure, it still kind of feels like someone's missing. But he'd fit with them all being stage/screen actors which is the other thing I know they have in common.

CynAq, to actuallyautistic

I have a number of question for people who report :

Do you daydream at all, and if you do, how does that work without visuals?

How does your memory work in general? Assuming you remember seeing things, being in places, meeting people, how does that work?

When you need to describe the appearance of something, how do you go about doing that? Do you plan ahead and memorize lists of features while the thing is in front of you?

Thanks! I’m trying to wrap my brain around this phenomenon I can’t experience myself so if you take some time to educate me I’ll be forever grateful.

@actuallyautistic

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@CynAq @actuallyautistic I have some ability to imagine visuals but it doesn't tend to happen automatically, and my visual memory is crap. The example I usually use is if somebody tells me "picture an apple" (or some other object I see often) I can do it, but if you show me the word "apple," I hear the word "apple" in my head.

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@CynAq @actuallyautistic My daydreams are in narrative form. I see things in my sleeping dreams. My memory, in general, works like crap for visual things, and how I describe the appearance of things is also crappily. It sucks trying to tell coworkers which library patron I'm talking about (if we don't see their account we often don't learn names) because I remember really precise things that aren't at all about how they look, the thing most likely to be apparent to others.

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@CynAq @actuallyautistic As in "The guy with the really high pitched voice that [coworker so and so] accidentally called 'Ma'am' on the phone because he used to call all the time but hardly ever came in." or "The squirrelly acting guy who unplugs our equipment."

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@CynAq @actuallyautistic On the other hand, I tend to remember mannerisms and how people move really well, so I'm the one who calls security when the guy who's been banned for a year walks in when I see him from two floors away, or recognizes my cousin first, from behind, when we're a full block behind him on a street in NY.

How do my comrades feel about airports?

Planes?

What are your top tips?

@actuallyautistic

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Mostly not bad, aside from hating handing my bags over where they might get lost but also not wanting to do just a carryon because I don't want to be wasteful by buying a razor where I'm going and throwing it out when I leave, and most trips are going to be long enough I'll want to shave at least once.

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic It used to bother me that I'd never know if any specific airport wanted me to have my liquids out or not, but I got Pre-Check so now I shouldn't have to do that anywhere. If I'm flying alone I try to get an aisle seat so I don't feel hemmed in, and if I'm flying with my husband I try to put him towards the aisle to give me a buffer between me and other people.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Broadway musicals performing on television during the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. And also wondering a bit what my fellow autistic adults think of How to Dance in Ohio, mostly the musical although I guess since the documentary is the source material knowing something about that wouldn't hurt. I suppose the fact that the actors are autistic is a good sign, but is it for us or is it for the neurotypicals?

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic At this point I hear about a story about autistic minors and their families and I assume that it's inspiration porn for neurotypicals, but that's probably unfair. (Also, are all the parents even NT? In real life it would seem unlikely.) I would be less skeptical if I had reason to believe someone autistic was involved in writing or directing the thing but the casting makes me somewhat curious.

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Since I brought it up, I suppose I should say that this article sounds promising. I like the way that they emphasize that these are "openly autistic" actors, because I have no doubt we've been on Broadway the whole time whether anybody knew about it or not: https://playbill.com/article/autism-isnt-something-to-fear-how-to-dance-in-ohio-is-breaking-grounds-in-autistic-representation

I rarely ever address anyone by name. There are people I've known for decades whose names I've never even used when addressing them directly.

Is that an thing?

@actuallyautistic

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic Maybe, in that it's something a lot of us seem to do. I just don't see the point unless it's necessary to clarify whom I'm talking to or to get their attention. Plus, doing it a lot is known to be a technique to make somebody feel like there's a bond between you, which makes me feel like somebody's trying to manipulate me into feeling closer to them instead of actually doing the work to build a real relationship when they do it to me.

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic (Not counting people whom I just met who seem to be doing it in a "repeating it to try to get it to stick" kind of way.)

I've always hated interview questions like "What's your biggest weakness?" I think I understand now. All my answers to this question are autistic traits, and I don't actually consider any of them to be weaknesses. I'm blunt, I take things literally, or I don't like misrepresenting data. None of these are weaknesses, they're just part of who I am! Maybe the next time I get that question in an interview, I'll just tell them that it's an ableist question because they're expecting me to belittle myself.

#ActuallyAutistic @actuallyautistic

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@PurpleStephyr @actuallyautistic The thing that gets me is that, if I know about it, it's not going to stay my biggest weakness, is it? I'm going to do something to improve it because I don't do things wrong on purpose, therefore it ceases to be a present tense answer to the question.

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@PurpleStephyr @actuallyautistic Back when I was trying to become a manager I used to say lack of previous management experience. I had one interview where they were really trying to get me to come up with something I'm actively bad at and asked "What would your manager tell you you need to improve?" They didn't like it when I told them no manager has ever told me I need to improve something, but every interview I had at that library felt hostile anyway.

estellechauvelin,
@estellechauvelin@masto.ai avatar

@PurpleStephyr @actuallyautistic It seemed like as soon as I said I didn't have previous management experience they stopped listening to my hypothetical how I would handle a situation answers, since I hadn't actually encountered them before, and I just sat there thinking... you had my resume, if lack of management experience was a dealbreaker, fine, but you didn't have to interview me. But other people I know had the same issues so it's not us, it's them.
