@liferstate I really hope Mr. Hand On Hip in particular agreed to this cover photo.

Three wonderful things that happened today:

  • I was offered accomodations without having so ask for them
  • I was called an amazing parent
  • my kids gave me their first ever hand made Mother’s Day cards… addressed to “my special person” rather than Mum no less!
Cassandra,
@Cassandra@autistics.life avatar

@looneybyron You are an amazing parent! That's clear from halfway across the globe.

Have you seen this person's work? Maybe of interest. https://www.youtube.com/@ShawnatheMom

CPC debating about drugs tonight. Eh, I don't think we're watching the same ads 😂 🤨

"I remember growing up as a teenager in the 1980s, and we would see commercials on TV. One commercial said, “This is your brain, and this is your brain on drugs.”

What are the commercials that we see right now? “Do drugs with a friend.”

Cassandra,
@Cassandra@autistics.life avatar

@stephanie Oh, that makes sense. The closest that occurred to me was podcast ads for microdose gummies.

Nikita doesn’t allow me to eat alone.

She came up to me while I was eating my dinner and starts asking me to pet her (she’s an affection eater).

Me: why do I always got to pet you while I eat, why can’t you pet me while I eat?

Nikita: pets me by rubbing her head all over my leg and arm

Sweet kitty. :RedHearts:

@ashleyspencer Is this the second time recently she's seemed to understand your English?

As a general rule, I avoid posting or reposting quotations from famous people unless they're accompanied with the citation of or link to a reasonably good source. But I so very, very often want to boost the quotes I agree with even if I am unsure of their true provenance. sigh

Cassandra,
@Cassandra@autistics.life avatar

@JeremyMallin Agreed. I like to be sure that what I'm boosting is correct.

Hey everyone, I thought this would be a great place to ask this question…

I’m studying at uni to become a counsellor, coming to the end of year so we’ve decided to do topics we’d love to know more about. I have to make a leaflet like you’d find in a GP surgery with facts about neurodivergence (it’s cool, I picked the topic with me being autistic) for others to learn from.

I have tonnes of great stuff to include but wanted to ask you guys for any ideas you might have?

Cassandra,
@Cassandra@autistics.life avatar

@Caroline Do you mean facts about neurodivergence that are relevant to counselling? Or could you say some of the ideas you have?

We don’t all need to buy the exact same things that we use occasionally. We should have organized borrowing.

Cassandra,
@Cassandra@autistics.life avatar

@ArmyGirl A bonus of a sharing community is that there's more likely to be someone who can fix things that get broken.

I order some Products from the United States.

The cost is $88 CAD.

There's a fixed international shipping cost of $48 CAD. Frustrating, but that is what the shipper has, so okay.

A couple days later, I get an email from UPS asking to pay the import duty fee. The import fee is $51 CAD.

That is more than half the cost of the product itself. I'm overall paying more for shipping+import fees than for the product.

When I moved here I assumed I could buy stuff from USA cheap because of NAFTA :(

Cassandra,
@Cassandra@autistics.life avatar

@mcc I've started to use the term customer disservice. It really does feel like they make it intentionally complicated so you’ll go away.

I'm thinking about meditation again. I have always thought that the point of meditaion is to endure the impossible pain of being alive. I mean just to sit and breathe is to be really vulnerable with all sensory sensitivities, for me mostly sounds. And feeling your body so intensely. So, I always thought that the whole point is to sit and make yourself endure all of it, no matter how bad it feels.

Cassandra,
@Cassandra@autistics.life avatar

@exme I remember reading theory that seated meditation might not work for (might even be bad for?) ND people. There’s a volume of thoughts and an intake of stimuli that NT's seem unable to understand.

I've had more success with moving meditations. Walks, yoga, dancing. It's a way to get out of my head, which I think is where the benefits of meditation come from.

Cassandra,
@Cassandra@autistics.life avatar

@exme That sounds to me like a different (autistic?) kind of tired. I assumed you were just meditating at home…

Ugh… had to remove and reinstall all our smart lamps (smart plugs actually) after today's split second power outage. 🙃

What a pain. It shouldn't have to be that complicated or that sensitive to power fluctuations.

Cassandra,
@Cassandra@autistics.life avatar

@JeremyMallin Oh no. I have to reset two appliances and the ventilation system and I already resent it. If I had to "remove and reinstall" for each lamp too…

The House is sitting until midnight tonight and tomorrow, and it's not even June yet.

It will suck to do this for six more weeks and not get the summer off like the other translators (I'll get a few extra days). Going back will suck until we figure out a way to bring me over permanently.

... "think about the future, think about the future" 😆

Cassandra,

@stephanie Oh my god. It's not even a bullshit short title like the "Stimulating the economy for the good of all Canadians act.”

Cassandra,
@Cassandra@autistics.life avatar

@stephanie Are they actually making arguments about why the short title should be deleted?

Cassandra,
@Cassandra@autistics.life avatar

@stephanie Motion to amend the short title to the “economic statement implementation act for a season and year that made sense at the time.”

I got a haircut today. Never my favourite experience, but she confirmed my hair's looking healthier, so I think I'm on the right track for healing.

I never understood why they always want to make hair huge. "What is that disproportionately large round ball on your neck?” "Oh, that's my hairlmet, I just got it done.”

I asked her to make it heavier. It is now definitely in the Vulcan - Bajoran range. [thumbs up]

I did a lot of thinking and Autistic Bookshop needs to diversify it's income sources.

30% profit at an average of $1.97 on book sales means the store will never pay for itself.

So I created a merch collection to help.

I had some reading and writing themed designs already, so will add more later.

Google should eventually bring people to this once the store has built up some authority, which is mainly how a merch collection will help.

@ashleyspencer I don't know that I've ever instantly loved a t-shirt more.

Have you looked into fitted t-shirts as well as unisex? (I would want to look scorching while wearing this.)

I was audibly incredulous at my partner when he phoned just now in response to a text I'd sent.

I’d asked him to send a link for the thing he had emailed about.

He said my request was unclear.

It made me want to give up on language entirely. If this was unclear, communication is literally impossible.

Then I realized the issue was actually that he hadn't bothered to read thoughtfully and had just instinctively phoned in response as per his communication preferences.

Cassandra,
@Cassandra@autistics.life avatar

I think the latter problem, at least, is fixable with clear boundaries and expectations.

"Going forward, I would like you to send me the link for the thing you're talking about, so I don't have to try to find it myself.”

He's pretty good at recognizing when he fucked up, and he agreed quickly.

We also figured out a teamwork approach to the current situation that will use both of our communications styles to our mutual advantage. [thumbs up]

Which movie I recorded on a whim and likely won't get all the way through should I watch?

Cassandra,
@Cassandra@autistics.life avatar

I got through the other two tonight.

Blended, I only lasted a few minutes before giving up. I think, like Underworld, this is one I recorded before and hated and deleted and then forgot entirely so I recorded it again, etc.

Yes Man was better. I like Jim Carrey when he does more earnest stuff, and the humour was slightly better than I was expecting. (But: Danny Masterson, being weird at women.)

Cassandra,
@Cassandra@autistics.life avatar

@4d3fect Oh, I think I watched the entirety of that one recently too. And The Truman Show, which I got a lot out of.
