Update available! This version is very old.

Xscreensaver has apparently been checking for updates and is disappointed that it hasn't had one for 14 months because Debian is too stable. Can anyone recommend a linux screensaver which would work with xfce and can be trusted to never do that?

exu,

Maybe ironically, the dev acutally makes a good case for why Wayland should be the future in that post. (Crashing the screen locker doesn’t cause it to display your desktop instead)

exu,

AirVPN, but only for its port forwarding to sail the high seas.

exu,

Yeah and after work hours. My work phone goes into silent mode every day 17.00 until 7.00 the next day with the schedule I set.

exu,

I think Debian might be a successful democracy in open source.

exu,

It still had issues like handling 8-bit colors in ascii art incorrectly last I checked a few years back, with that pr already being a few years old then.

exu,

Wood cutting might have a similar appeal.

exu,

I know at least one pr that wasn’t (still hasn’t been?) merged for years; Proper 8-bit color sequence support.

exu,

As a user it’s definitely harder to get into than apt or dnf. However, as a packager, it’s very easy to package new applications for pacman. That’s also why the AUR offers this many packages often not found in other distros.

exu,

I’d argue against Neofetch being completed. PRs to properly handle custom colors in the terminal properly for example have been open for years.

exu,

Not having automated updates can quickly lead to not doing updates at all. Same goes for backups.

Whenever possible, one should automate tedious stuff.

exu,

I would eat a raw onion for the laughs

exu,

Generally /usr should be managed by the package manager, /etc is for global custom configs and the user home is user specific.
/var shouldn’t really be config, mostly logs or webservers for some reason.

exu,

Actually that’s RMS getting older. Afaik only GNU rm protects the root.

exu,

I don’t think there’s any better alternative currently, but maybe something can be built based on the recent AACSv2 exploits.

exu,

Afaik they’ve been pretty good stewards of Wordpress and other software they acquired.

exu,

Doesn’t GRUB support LUKS2 nowadays? I know that wasn’t the case a year ago or so, but I didn’t see a notice on the Archwiki last time I checked.

exu,

It’s a distribution completely centered around the Nix package manager. This basically allows you to program how your system should look using one programming language. If you want an identical system, just copy that file and you’re set.

exu,

Are you talking about that vm.max_memory something?
Not sure how you’d change it in Nix exactly, but should be simple enough.

exu,

I’ve joined Linux clients to AD domains before, but I didn’t know about Fleet Commander. (admittedly, I didn’t really look) Might be something to play with for a bit

exu,

Is this still an issue with UEFI nowadays? The other bootloader should still be selectable in the bootmenu if it wasn’t overwritten.
