The Taylor Swift vinyl retails for $46 and is already going for $150+ on eBay and Discogs. This is why we can’t have nice things (heh) and so against the spirit of Record Store Day.

I hate this. It’s so gross. Don’t gouge people on shit like this. The pressing size is good and you could just charge double and still do well! But 3x plus is just greedy.

@cyanbane yup!! It harms everyone. Like, we don’t have to be greedy. Just b/c you can speculate on something doesn’t mean you have to. FFS.

@strngwys for a limited edition grey vinyl of something that only had a digital release and is a two vinyl set, that’s standard price!

@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@Gartenberg yeah, I picked it up as a pandemic hobby as someone who never had them before (hipster college friends did but I couldn’t be bothered) but I totally agree on the price. For me, I buy stuff from bands/artists I love

@NerdyBirdie @OrangeAndBlackk hey, I’m not arguing with supply/demand. But it sucks when the whole point of RSD is to get people to local stores and when the gouging is just out of control. I liked it better (pre-pandemic) when we were all just music fans.

@Gartenberg and I should clarify I had bought one-off records pre-pandemic but really got into during the pandemic

@sharding yah, I’m the same way tbh. But for Taylor stuff, I know I have to be in early or else. The 1989 pink Record Store Day LP that I got for $65 online b/c my local sold out now regularly goes for $1500+ and is even higher on Discogs

@brentharrell hmm, so my love of all things Sesame Street makes me Cookie Monster. I think @briannawu is Hawaiian Punch. Simone is our Life Saver, but she might be more Crayola energy? @charlesatan, please weigh in!

Terrible things happening in media today but b/c media people aren’t here (there are exceptions but you all know I’m right. Let’s not even talk about the farce that is journa.host — sorry to my friends on that instance), I doubt it’ll impact my TL on Mastodon much.

Cultural things like this really do make it clear how much this place, as much as I’m enjoying it, is not my home the way the hellsite was.

@mergesort fully agree!

@chris @dcseifert I really hope that Tumblr adopting ActivityPub can bring more content into this world and make it stickier. My biggest fear has always been that people would leave Twitter but not really migrate anywhere. Like, you can get a Mastodon account but if you never use it, it doesn’t matter. My fear has always been that Twitter’s death will just splinter us or lead to lots of people simply opting out. Sigh.

Why is it so hard to get into the habit of using Mastodon?? Am I just overloaded with social networks? Ok, hi, I'm here, back again, going to tweet or toot or share or whatever here

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@laurengoode it’s just not as instinctive. Clients have helped me with it. Ivory on iOS/Mac and Elk.zone in the browser. But it has taken me a lot of time to have to get in the habit.

News mattered. I worked for one of BuzzFeed’s top competitors in the peak era and competing with them was so tough because they raised all this money (Mashable didn’t raise until 2014, which was WAY later than it should have been and we raised way less than we should have) and hired all these people to do all this incredible work, in video (ZeFrank is genius) and of course in news. They were one hell of a competitor and I hate seeing this.

Like, watching the decline of digital media, a thing I gave so much of my life to, is just depressing. I used to say to people at Mashable (and this was very early, maybe 2010 when I first said this) that we had to become the New York Times before the Times became us. The same was true for BuzzFeed. Unfortunately for both of us, The Times became us before we could become them. All credit to The Times on that. The most amazing comeback aside from Apple I’ve ever seen.
