The admin of sh.itjust.works has been approached but as of yet has failed to reply to concerned Lemmy users. I’m glad Beehaw admins look out for us by cutting off instances that host communities like this.
platforms dont have a moral obligations to host opinions it is one thing when someone says something sane but unpopular and gets themselfs booted thats not good however extremist opinions such as nazism have no place on a decent platform look at what happened to voat and basically every other platform promoting free speech people who got booted off moderated platforms go there to spread their hate and destroy the site
agreed but i woudnt call it won just yet lets see what happens after the 3rd party apps stop working and people who may not have been paying attention get affected
Beehaw is defederated from lemmygrad.ml because it's an abusive instance full of hateful, vitriolic trolls. lemmygrad.ml resolves to the same IP as lemmy.ml. The creator and head admin of that particular instance is a neofascist who has previously been banned from r/socialism on reddit because he posted Nazi propaganda there....
Honestly this is too extreme the problems werent with the instances themselfs it was that a lot of users from over there were overwhelming the moderators and admins and something had to be done in the end the defed was chosen because it is the only option currently provided by lemmy if you look into the comments you can see that the admins dont want to push the big red defed button but thats the only option they have this issue isnt black and white
Defederating means that you as the user cannot interact or see comunities on those instances from this one and would need another account on a instance that is federated with them
They said in the post that this is because of inssuficient mod tools a Mastodon for instance is far better in that regard but even then when it exploded instances blocked mastodon.social and other due to moderation concerns once the reddit wave is given time to settle down and better tools are made available i think they will refederate with those instances
Defederating means that for all intents and purposes beehaw and lemmy.world dont exist to each other its like if you and another person just agreed to not talk anymore and deleted each others phone number the posts that have federated over still exist but they wont be updated in any way
they have moderators but the situation was just that bad and keep in mind moderators are volunteers and you cant just assign anyone to it either and when given the choice of keep moderator and admin time from other important issues or simply do something about the problem they chose the second its not an ideal solution but it is a solution
To anyone looking to donate here is a financial thread made by the admins for this month where they outline where money is going and how much is spent roughly each month (it is a few days old however and donations have increased since then so i would keep that in mind) https://beehaw.org/post/428209
Myself personally I get most of my reading done on my 45 minute commute to work on the bus/train. I also enjoy reading in the mornings on weekends and occasionally in the evening on weekdays....
Ive tried linux before mainly manjaro and endevouros and recently mint i havent really stuck to them however and gone back to windows but im willing to give linux another shot
Mainly familiarity to windows and discord not having audio for screensharing im probably not going to switch fully but i dont see the harm in having it on a separate drive on my machine to use
Thanks for the detailed explanation i accually didnt know about the man command makes sense though As for apt and apt-upgrade i didnt accually know apt-upgrade existed but that is good to know as for the shell im not that intimidated by it ive used command prompt plenty of times in windows and when trying other different distros one question i remember getting nvidia drivers installed being somewhat dificult on linux is this still the case or has something changed?
it isnt currently possible to migrate users from an instance to another but there is an issue on github about it so maybe it will get implemented at some point as for posts from a deleted instance im not sure maybe someone else can answer that
i rarely buy physical books as i like reading during breaks or when im waiting on something and its not always feasible to have a book with me i buy books when they are available for a price that will not bankrupt me as a book thats 10 dollars is around 50 ron wich in my opinion is far too much especially as i need money for other things otherwise i simply pirate them
I like the idea and think it would be a really good addition and as alyaza said this has been thought aout on the discord it would definitely be nice to see people helping each other instead of controversy like most social media is filled with
For me its not so much that its a gimmick or whatever but that it just looks stupid on your face imagine being in public and seeing someone with a flight recorder strapped to their face i like VR technology and i think as it evolves itl change how we interact with media but this is just not it
You raise a good point moderation has been conditioned by a lot of the internet to be full of power hungry shit bags that you can do nothing about and as such its assumed that if a change is done by the moderators that is unpopular it is automatically bad even if it was decided on with good intentions.
I personally think that to solve this transparency is key before making a decision that effects the community announce it and get feedback try to understand why people dont like it and make sure your intentions are clear so that there is no miscommunication.
Make sure lines of communication between normal user and admin are open so that we can state our opinions look at the reddit black out its being done because it is the only way people can get the admins to listen and other attempts at making change happen failed, by accually taking into account the opinions of the users and having an easy way to talk to the people in charge you avoid them feeling powerless and deciding on more drastic measures
not that big a shock if you consider the amount of work it is to moderate that kind of thing reddit has shittons of money to make sure illegal things are not on the site unlike instances here that run on donations
I've dabbled with Linux over the years, first with Ubuntu in the early 2010s, then Elementary OS when that dropped, and a few years ago I really enjoyed how customizable the gui was with Xubuntu. I was able to make it look just like WIndows 2000 which was really cool....
Endeavour is based on Arch while KDE neon was based on kubuntu i think it was ones not strictly better than the other it just depends on what you want from the OS
