🚁🚠 Cables are the main threat to helicopters in Switzerland.

I like this very pragmatic solution[1] by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation to put a very accurate GNSS-based measuring tool on the ropes to precisely measure their location to add them on the map[2].

β€œConsequences of this debris range from harmless (sitting on SpaceX’s developed property) to severe (the tidal algal flats are considered nearly unrepairable by human interaction and take 10+ years to form naturally). The FAA must address and mitigate these problems before allowing SpaceX to launch again.”

@titociuro Indeed. SpaceX is now in the drilling business[1] because it needs a ridiculous amount of Methane for the Starship program. The whole β€œmake humans inter-planetary" stuff doesn't make sense if you're trashing our home planet ...

In the age of AI-generated emails, I want now more than ever a character count-limited messaging channel like old school Twitter DMs for unapproved recipients.

Concerned that the generative AIs are just going to make adding more boilerplate the norm.

PSA: For folks in the Lake Leman region, the Swiss + French Armies and critical infrastructure partners (Geneva Airport, SBB Railways ... ) are doing a joint military operation that can involve low-flying military aircrafts over the lake and the Jura/Plateau between the 1st and 9th of May.

The scenario of the exercise is a threat to Switzerland caused by separatist militias of a fictional European country.

CATL announces 500 Wh/kg batteries, nearly double the energy density of Tesla’s best cells.

These cells have potential in applications like aviation, although still have an energy density less than 1/10th that of jet fuel, likely limiting them to short range aircraft.

πŸ”‹Announcing higher energy density (specific energy) cells, without giving more details, is a bit like saying you have more qubits. Battery chemistries are about trade-offs.

Sure, you're maximizing one metric, but it doesn't say much about the other ones (cost, life span, charging / decharging speeds, safety ... ).

And of course, there is always an encryption angle.

Darmanin, French Minister of the Interior, is now calling for increased surveillance of encrypted messaging apps. Complaining that the wiretaps of phone lines are yielding diminishing returns, and that the same means as terrorism cases should be used against protesters.

French police put protesters in custody.

Police says they are free to go if they provide them with the unlock code of their phones. The people under custody refuse.

They ended up getting charged for β€œrefusal to hand over to the judicial authorities a secret encryption key of a means of cryptology”

Even worse for one of the protesters, who didn't bring his phone and got the same charge ...

Just landed in Japan πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅ after the most indirect direct flight I’ve taken.
Due to the Russian airspace being closed to Swiss, we first flew south of Ukraine, over the Black Sea, following the southern border of Russia.
Briefly spoke with 1 of the 4 pilots on the flight who said the flight was 125% of the great circle path. 25% longer than the direct route has a significant impact on increased take-off weight and fuel consumption!

    fj,
    @fj@mastodon.social avatar

The return flight will be a polar route, for which Swiss had to buy expensive ETOPS certificates since there are no diversion airports within hours of the flight route. The polar route is actually significantly more efficient since the only detour is to cross the Bering Strait, and from there direct great circle path to ZΓΌrich. GNSS works on polar routes but no SATCOM. Hope to catch some boreal aurora
