If a single person gets the majority of votes, then they get to make the decisions.

But there would be multiple constituencies in my hypothetical scenario. Someone from the Left Party in District A gets a majority of the District A votes, but someone from the Right Party from District B gets a majority of the District B votes. So, the majorities in Districts A and B get their voices effectively represented, but the minorities aren’t shut out. In District C, no one wins a majority, but all the voters are represented in the legislature.

Compare the current system, where the Left Party in District A gets the majority of votes (or even the most votes, but no majority). The Left Party wins District A, but there’s no representation at all for the voters who didn’t vote for the Left Party. Isn’t it easier to buy the vote of just the one Left Rep for District A?

Yes, pretty much that!

That’s exactly right, thank you.

I’d quite like a government that doesn’t make me ashamed to be British.

In the meantime, does anyone know of any legal funds I can donate to that will help the people being targeted by this inhumane policy?

frankPodmore,

It’s inhumane because even people who have legitimate claims will be deported to Rwanda against their wills, and will never be allowed to have those legitimate claims reveiwed.

What are the most mindblowingly creative, inventive, or otherwise otherworldly albums you know of?

One of my favorite things to do while stoned is listen to albums that are really unique, artful, and/or jam packed with soul and energy, as in that head space music just hits completely differently and it just lends to me finding a deep love and appreciation for the art of music. What’re some of your favorites?

frankPodmore,
@frankPodmore@slrpnk.net avatar

Bitches Brew by Miles Davis.

I once got really stoned and fell asleep while listening to it on a loop. I had all these insane dreams where I was walking through a pitch black jungle. I could feel all this stuff, the different textures of plants, the ground under foot, animals brushing by in the night, but I couldn’t see anything: a totally non-visual dream. It wasn’t scary, just super weird. Never experienced anything like it before or since.

Thanks! I’d heard of MWC and that’s definitely an interesting model that I’d like to drawn on.

I’ll check out Mutual Interest, too.

Thanks, I’ll take a look.

I’ve been seeing a worrying number of these people on Lemmy lately, sharing enlightened takes including but not limited to “voting for Biden is tantamount to fascism” and “the concept of an assigned gender, or even an assigned name, at birth is transphobic” and none of them seem to be interested in reading more than...

Interestingly, Bertrand Russell made a similar argument about Marxism and Christianity, so you’re not alone in feeling this way.

I think the tendency you’re describing is real, but it only holds among a tiny minority of people, who happen to be quite loud in mainly online spaces. There’s no significant organisation of any kind that holds those views or is doing anything to implement them as any kind of policy, anywhere in the world.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of evangelical Christians!

My advice dealing with either is to politely engage, explain your views and, if they start being rude, stop talking to them.

@frankPodmore@slrpnk.net avatar

Sorry, I don’t understand the relevance of this comment. I didn’t mention money and nor did OP. I don’t think tankies are better than Evangelicals, either (which I assume is what you meant). I just think the Evangelicals are more of a problem, because of their greater influence.

Is there a more politically and ideologically diverse alternative for Lemmy?

I know the real answer is reddit but I really don’t want to go back now that I’ve already grown used to life without it. I was hoping for Lemmy to be a viable substitute but it isn’t. I can see how this place is wonderful for the certain type of person but that person is not me. My experience during the past 6+ months has...

frankPodmore,
@frankPodmore@slrpnk.net avatar

I don’t think there is one, unfortunately. I agree that lack of ideological diversity is a problem with the Fediverse in general, but it’s a problem that likely won’t go away unless the Fediverse becomes mainstream.

Not really interested in discussing things with fascists, but I’ve rarely seen anyone here who’s to the right of, like, a milquetoast social democrat.

frankPodmore,
@frankPodmore@slrpnk.net avatar

That is true, but I did find a lot of people on Twitter and Reddit who I could have productive and interesting disagreements with, even though I naturally mostly followed and subscribed to people and things I did agree with.

The ‘world was safer’ argument is an especially bizarre one to make this week, of all weeks, when the Middle East is ‘on the cusp’ of a wider conflict that was partly caused by Donald Trump’s unilateral withdrawal from a treaty with Iran. And Trump also inflamed tensions in that same region by moving the US’ Israeli Embassy to Jersualem. As to conflict in ‘the West’ specifically, he also endorsed and continues to endorse the very people pushing the West towards conflict, and himself caused violent conflict in the US, which was part of ‘the West’ last time I checked.

frankPodmore,
@frankPodmore@slrpnk.net avatar

There are just so many counter examples! I honestly cannot think of a major political figure who’s made such an utterly bizarre argument.

What happened to all the baddies you knew growing up?

I don’t know if this is something people say in other countries, but in my country, there’s this common cliché or “wisdom” where adults will assure you that the people who picked on you in environments like school will universally develop lives of hardship later on, one way or another getting into mayhem....

The serious psychos are in and out of jail. The ones who were just kinda dicks sometimes (which to be honest probably includes me) are basically okay. And why shouldn’t we be? Being a dick when you’re still learning to be a person shouldn’t carry a life sentence of any kind.

frankPodmore,
@frankPodmore@slrpnk.net avatar

I think other people have answered the first half of the question adequately. I’m curious as to why you particularly want it to start up again, given that it previously ‘faded away’.

As a different flag waving Labour PM once said, ‘There’s only one Labour tradition I never liked: losing’.

Labour’s values are British values, and vice-versa. I’m not saying this in a jingoistic way, but our particular form of social democracy is a part of how we see ourselves as a country, and Labour is obviously a part of that. There’s no harm in saying we like this country and no possible good can come from pretending we don’t.

Anyway, if flag-waving was something Labour was doing as far back as World War 2, I’d say that in itself makes it pretty traditional.

If we conceive of ethics as rooted in duty or virtue, rather than outcomes, we can then argue that simply doing your duty or being virtuous are good regardless of whether they lead to harm reduction or mitigation. The people here who have suggested just doing your job well (a duty) or being polite (a virtue) are putting forward a model of ethics based on these ideas.

Of all the weirdness here, the American accent has to top the list. Who is this actually aimed at?

frankPodmore,
@frankPodmore@slrpnk.net avatar

Yeah, definitely. It’s not really surprising that the group most likely to cycle is also the group that’s socialised into taking risks!

But instead, they turn around and blame traffic problems on women taking their kids to school!
