You know that isn’t true. You’ve written about Friday Night Baseball (Apple TV), Thursday Night Football (Amazon Prime), the NFL playoff game that was on Peacock, MLS, etc. There are probably others and I’m sure the list will continue to grow.

@daringfireball That depends on what you mean by manufacture. How likely is it that Apple wouldn’t still have to import the SOC and sensors that process the blood oxygen readings?

Also, what about repairs to existing watches? Are they still allowed to do that?

@daringfireball I get the customer service aspect, but I really don’t understand why they didn’t simply offer a setting for power users to require the iCloud password in order to change the iCloud password.

This clever solution is good for the masses but it seems like weird overkill for power users.

Did a quick size comparison of the MacBook Pro 16” with the PowerBook G4 12”. It blew me away that the 12 and 16 are nearly identical in weight. I remember thinking my 12” was so tiny and lightweight twenty years ago.

MBP 16”
90.34 cubic inches
4.7/4.8 lbs.

PowerBook 12”
110.61 cubic inches
4.6 lbs.

PowerBook 17” (for giggles)
157.08 cubic inches
6.9 lbs.

✨ It’s true. I’ve been working on this blog post for ten years.

You see, I’ve been slowly buying up nearly seventy super rare issues of a 80s/90s gadget catalog that meant the world to me growing up. And in the process, I’ve uncovered the secret history of this lost copywriting art.

PLUS, as a bonus, I’ve scanned every single issue — so you can read them all.

I hope you enjoy: https://cabel.com/2023/11/06/dak-and-the-golden-age-of-gadget-catalogs/

@daringfireball How can you label a 13-17% increase modest? The world is hurting right now over 8% inflation. If workers are seeing any pay increases, they are nowhere near 15%. And this is on top of a recent pay hike for the service.

Regular people have limited budgets. They will start dropping services because their budget won’t allow them to keep everything when everything is increasing but their pay is not keeping pace.

gruber, to random
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

I’m surprised the setup process for every new iPhone still asks whether you want to use FaceID with a mask when 99+% of people aren’t wearing face masks any more. There are lots of features that a small percentage of people use, but they don’t get asked in the device setup process.

frankly,
@frankly@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber @gretyl I think for something that is literally one tap and is highly unlikely that people who need it would be aware of if it weren’t part of the setup justifies it staying in the setup.

This FineWoven case is so bad, this may be the year I do the unthinkable (for me at least) and go case-less with my iPhone 15 Pro Max.

frankly,
@frankly@mastodon.social avatar

@viticci My problem with the FineWoven case is that I don’t feel secure holding it in my hand. The phone constantly feels like I’m going to drop it.

I do think it looks nice, but the feel in hand is the most important thing for me when it comes to a case. I have another case on the way and I’m looking at others. It’s a shame because for a few years, the Apple leather case has been an instant buy with no regrets.
