having a real "time enough at last" moment this week where I finally have the hours set aside to work undisturbed after several weeks of not really having enough uninterrupted stretches to do anything useful, but now my back hurts juuust enough that it is short-circuiting my attention span

freakboy3742,

@glyph So… you know your body, everyone needs more exercise, IANYD (your doctor), etc; but I discovered the hard way that gall stones often manifest as referred lower back pain. I had a couple of years of intermittent back pain until I had an incident so bad it put me in emergency with liver function numbers in the “you’re likely gonna need a transplant” range.

Good news is that I recovered, and one removed gall bladder later, I have a lot less intermittent back pain. YMMV :-)

To the genius UI designer at Discord that decided that every third keystroke should pop up an animated reaction gif dialog that obscures the actual content, and is just generally distracting: I hope fire ants take up residence in your underwear.

Sphinx experts - is there any way to redirect/reset the anchor point for :class:references when you’re using autodoc? Use case: I want to have a docs reference page for “mypkg.Foo", which will include the API docs generated by autodoc, but I also want to include some usage guides etc before the "class mypkg.Foo" part of the page.

freakboy3742,

@ubernostrum I don't think that's it. I think you're suggesting putting .. module:: at the top as the fix; in my case, I want to reference a class, not a module; a bare.. class:: isn't a no-op (it renders a class definition header); and having ..class:: and .. autoclass for the same class generates an error.

Do I have any Slovenian followers? Tom Scott, in a recent video, used the Slovenian word “udarniško”, translated as “grassroots volunteer work, done for the benefit of the community”. It sounds like a perfect phrase for so much FLOSS community work, I can’t find any corroboration of that translation. Can anyone confirm/clarify the definition?

freakboy3742,

Thanks to everyone that responded with details about “udarniško" - looks like the translation Tom Scott provided was... conflicted. At the very least, it appears to have some very heavy "back in the good old days of communism" vibes, which is plausible given the age of the gentleman who used it in the video; I'm a little surprised Scott's local production team (who he lauded in the video) ... chose to use the term in a translation.

This article captures something that's really been on my mind lately - how do we prepare for the end of a useful open Internet? https://defector.com/the-last-page-of-the-internet

I don't think it's possible to stop the tide of meaningless text and spam that LLMs will wreak on an open system, but how do we build sustainable semi-closed ones? I really don't want Discord to be the end result, as it's both totally unsearchable and will get more and more user hostile over time, much like Reddit.

freakboy3742,

@andrew @glyph I, for one, welcome my new Andrew-shaped overlord…

freakboy3742,

@andrew @carlton This. The company that works out how to manage deployment and basic management of small-to-medium sized cloud services will make a mint. Think containers, but for the entire server stack, with a UX For upgrades that is “click button, receive bacon”, with easy migration between hosting providers.

freakboy3742,

@phildini @andrew @glyph Can you have Stockholm Syndrome, but for an entire system of colonial pseudo-feudal government? Asking for the Commonwealth... :-)

freakboy3742,

@glyph @phildini @andrew There is a joke here to be made about inflammable monarchs that I couldn't possible make, residing as I do in a country with robust sedition and treason laws.

It occurs to me that one of the biggest contributions that Briefcase may ultimately make is implicitly documenting a minimal working case for packaging an app with an installer on every platform under the sun. "I don't want to use Briefcase, but I want to build an MSI, and WiX's documentation is impenetrable" is a non-zero portion of our user base. Likewise for signing and notarization on macOS.

freakboy3742,

@aurorapenguin A qualified yes. It's best suited for GUI tools; but it can also be used for command line tools on Linux (and we have some ideas for how to make macOS and Windows command line tools). In theory any GUI toolkit is supported, but there are complications for some of them (e.g., Tkinter doesn't work out of the box).

freakboy3742,

@aurorapenguin It's a very different use case to console_scripts. It's for situations where the assumption is the end user doesn't know/care that the tool is written in Python, and the distribution story doesn't start with “create a venv". pex etc are coming from the other direction - you have a tool that is designed to be installed in a venv, but want it to be available system wide without an explicit venv.

After a couple of weeks of rather active medical stuff, and seven years of symptoms on and off, I may finally have a diagnosis for exactly what autoimmune disease I have.

This hopefully means I now get the right treatment/management and feel better. Fingers crossed!

freakboy3742,

@andrew Cue the "knowing is half the battle” screenshot... hope the management plan works out.

My French is barely at the level of “would not go hungry in a restaurant”. Yet with computer assistance, I was just able to respond to a user query in a chat forum in French.

It’s worth remembering that sometimes, technology can be a force for good.

freakboy3742,

(And before anyone responds: I’m sure the translation wasn’t perfect; and it only works in French because of the volume of French material used to train the translation tools, so more marginal languages dont benefit. But the fact this is possible at all is remarkable)
