look, all i want is to come across as the best version of myself in every single interaction; understand, meet, and exceed the expectations of every human being who is aware of me; and also make them laugh…is that too much to ask??

@lorenipsum Turns out no, because you're nailing it ❤️

You know a conference cares about its marginalized attendees when a random short elevator ride includes not one, but two stenographers. Was too shy to say hello, but if y'all see this, you are APPRECIATED. #PyConUS

ETA: the stenographers were /using/ the elevator, they were not /doing stenography/ at the time 🤣

Yhg1s,
@Yhg1s@social.coop avatar

@bitprophet It may be that I'm tired, but I spent way too long trying to figure out why you would need a stenographer in an elevator at all, let alone two 😅

Does anyone happen to know if it is possible to get a projector for an open space at ? I have some ideas that involve discussions of code where it would be useful if a participant could share their screen with a larger group.

Yhg1s,
@Yhg1s@social.coop avatar

@glyph I asked around, but not at this stage, sorry. If it's something that more groups would find useful it's something we could try to organise for next year.

I wanna hear about the best concerts you’ve been to! Some of mine:

  • Ozomatli at The Catalyst - played until curfew, spilled out onto the street and jammed for another hour until the cops came
  • Flaming Lips at Liberty Hall - second set, played the entirety of Dark Side
  • Dar Williams at Liberty - power went out, she sat on the edge of the stage and played three songs by flashlight
  • Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlisle, et al at the Gorge - simply magical

@jacob Paradiso in Amsterdam has been host of so many good ones! George Clinton and P-Funk (multiple times), Madness, Maceo Parker with Candy Dulfer as (not-very) surprise guest.

Hans Dulfer playing at a public event in Amstelveen with his extremely funk band, with his daughter Candy showing up at random because she'd been out grocery shopping, and taking her dad's sax and just improvising a smashing performance.

Yhg1s,
@Yhg1s@social.coop avatar

@jacob Suzanne Vega in Paradiso several times with just a bassist, where one time she took requests, someone shouted "Left of Center" (which is originally a very orchestral song) and she told the story of how the first time she played it as a duo was because of a request in Paradiso, they weren't sure if it was going to work and now they play it all over the world that way, and the guy who shouted the request shouts "yeah, that was me!" 😂

Yhg1s,
@Yhg1s@social.coop avatar

@jacob Sting in Berlln with the Royal Philharmonic and Branford Marsalis (also a recorded DVD and CD) where we (a few fan club members) got to see rehearsals. They practiced the bit where Branford comes on while playing the long opening note of Englishman in New York a few times, just to get timing right. The orchestra played exactly the same each time, the rest of the band was similar but more loose, and Branford's sax was completely different but just so fantastic each time.

Pet peeve:

🛫 = plane taking off
🛫 = plane landing
🛬 = plane crashing

no, it’s not easy to live with my brain why do you ask

Yhg1s,
@Yhg1s@social.coop avatar

@webology @hynek that's my usual view of planes as they take off of Schiphol (AMS) and fly over my house tbh 😅

The registration desk is disco this year!

(Legal disclaimer: no actual disco guaranteed; visual effect is an artifact of phone camera's recording.)

A picture of the PyCon US 2024 registration desk, looking fabulous. There are five desks adorned with LED lighting in blue, yellow, green, orange and blue again. All the lighting flickers at a different frequency.

It seems like editing one's answers on Stack Overflow is not an effective protest vote, but perhaps upvoting https://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/430135/where-is-the-opt-out-option-so-my-answers-dont-get-used-by-openai could be one signal that would be legible to the site's owners

@satya Don't worry, that's only a thing since Python 2.5, so that's 18 years, not 22 😇

It's a tough day when everyone you work with directly, including your manager, is laid off -- excuse me, "had their roles reduced", and you're asked to onboard their replacements, people told to take those very same roles just in a different country who are not any happier about it. (It's almost like capitalism isn't actually good and you shouldn't want to live in the US.)

I suspect I'll be taking Akio on extra long walks for the time being.

Yhg1s,

@jyasskin the new ones are in Munich, so they have a works council (as do I, in .nl). The right people there have been notified. Right now I'm trying to not burn any bridges while I figure out what I can do for the old team.

Yhg1s,
@Yhg1s@social.coop avatar

@timthelion They're not my replacements, but yes, I know. I'm not doing so out of love for the company or anything.

There's something profoundly amazing about the fact that I've been able to work in computers for 25 years and still basically know almost nothing about how networking actually works.

Yhg1s,
@Yhg1s@social.coop avatar

@jacob Same -- and also for computers in general. This is so different from, say, construction or gardening or electrical wiring, it's silly.

Sure, I understand electrical current and how you can use it to make NAND gates, and I can model complex relationships and draw 3D pictures, but every time I learn more about everything in between I just uncover more dimensions I do not understand and yet those details affect the work I do.

The book discourse seems to have moved to other sites than Masto, so I nearly missed this myself: khōréō is raising funds for its fourth year: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/khoreo/khoreo-year-4

If you're into speculative fiction, or just interested in different types of writing, khōréō has an amazing track record in just three years, and it's well worth the $20 for the four issues. (Also I would be sad if they didn't make their funding goal.)
