Here is my personal take on the TikTok drama.

  1. The app and service is trash.

  2. I personally think it should be banned along with Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, Reddit and Instagram because it’s only purpose is to harvest data.

  3. Any law banning TikTok will most likely be struck down as unconstitutional.

  4. A better approach would be creating laws codifying the right to privacy, data retention, data destruction and banning the sale of data from these services. No exceptions.

Thats how i understood it. That is why it is so worrying, what you want is for it to be banned in violation of the rights and freedoms given by the constitution. You recognize it would violate the constitution yet still want it. That is what is so concerning.

No i got that, its concerning that you think someone who wishes to consent to giving up their data but simply is foolish and doesnt know what is best for them is a good justification for denying free speech is exactly what concerns me.

To be fair we arent that misaligned. I do think that pervasive social networks should be treated as public space and their ability to censor curtailed. But I would not ban the medium or any forum beyond enforcing limitations on them.

Agreed, but they didnt, nor do i think they should have. Simply being a service on the internet should not qualify you as a common carrier. I do think prolific social media services which do not inter-operate opening with other third-party services however should be classified as common carriers.

@skyblond while btrfs and LVM can be used to get similar results in some ways they really dont overlap that much. I run all my laptops with LVM+LUKS+BTRFS and i find it to be a great setup... I also use raid when there are multiple drives

@skyblond i only use the basic functions of BTRFS, snapshots, backup, and copy-on-write.. the other stuff is a bit buggy and as you point out not as powerful as LVM anyway. Also you are likely going to need different formats on different partitions so you will need LVM anyway.

The U.S. government should not be in the business of shutting down social media firms on the basis of China-hate. TikTok is no worse (and in fact seems to be far better) than various social media apps from U.S.-based firms. There's a lot of be upset with China about, but TikTok (and drone leader DJI, which also has bipartisan China-hate trying to ban it) are not where Congress should be getting involved. If Congress passes such bans and Biden signs them, there will be major court battles and courts should strike the bans down.

Im not sure what point your making. The fact that someone who bought some tiktok stock has done some bad things has what exactly to do with tiktok? Is he the CEO or even work for them?

I mean tats literally some random dude with shares, granted its a high value of shares, but still a random dude with shares. You do know a share holder, no matter how many shares they hold, does not get to dictate or influence day to day operations at a company right?

It would literally be illegal (and very uncommon) for an investor who holds no position in a company to have any day-to-day influence. They can and do have influence when they hold a position in the company. That position may even be as a board member, though this would very much limit their dat-to-day influence.

My new company has about 7 founding investors at about the same ownership % as him... I have never even heard from a single one of them past the initial investment. I run the company and they dont even know me, let alone have influence.
