Psst... soft relaunch of my merch store today: https://www.redshirtjeff.com — I'll announce it on YouTube later, but if you like classics like "It was DNS" or "Cosplaying as a Sysadmin", get them now before the wider YT audience makes 'em go out of stock!
@qlp I am taking feedback on sizing now—a couple people have asked about 4X (and one 5X), so I'm noting this for the next order. I'll try to add in options in the next round of shirt orders!
@viticci any time I've had window-y things happen on my iPad, it's been entirely accidental, and takes me like 3 minutes to figure out how to get rid of the annoying popover or Split View. It is entirely unintuitive, IMO.
@geerlingguy Hey Jeff, Daughter wants a Camera for Photos, decent chunk will be macro, vlogging, and maybe webcam stream.
Sony ZV-E10 comes up a few places. Only downside is 720p webcam mode.
For around the same 600-800 price, anything you would recommend as better choice?
Has anyone managed to use the #PiMoroni NVMe base board by directly loading OS on to the NVME drive? Or do I really have to do the dance of loading OS on SD card first? @geerlingguy@gadgetoid#RaspberryPi
@geerlingguy Re: pushbutton to short two gpio pins, you don't want that because.... it will short two gpio pins :) You also need at least a current-limiting resistor.
@ednl heh, well... in my case it's for hitting power off via GPIO in testing. Shouldn't be an issue, I currently use a little jumper but it's just annoying (and tiny)
Odd, but cool; this is one of ArduCam's new Pivistation 5 pre-assembled cameras. Good enough for indoor use, but meant for camera development with a variety of their nice Sony sensors.
Been testing review units they sent, they're currently running a Kickstarter.
@geerlingguy you push out a ton of vids nowadays and I never miss any of them, on any of your channels. You getting the new studio has been a big blessing, either bcos it made it easier to produce more videos or it just became necessary in order for you to pay it off, or perhaps a bit of both. Either way, I'm happy!
@irfan mostly it's easier now because I can record during the day. I used to have to wait until kids were in bed! Plus I have room to work on long term projects.
The workbench is coming together—and Red Shirt Jeff made sure to inaugurate it with a Hacksmith mini lightsaber and a little magic smoke 🫢 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toEvV2QGVnU
@geerlingguy have you looked into Meshtastic at all? I feel like you and your dad could put out some awesome videos about maximising range for LoRa nodes that the Meshtastic crowd would love (and it would bring a lot of attention to the hobby too!)
@andy_warb@Ryanteck If you have a network that can exchange messages, you have a network that can do other fun stuff, learning mesh networking is fun, even as a basic exercise.
There are a few folks around STL who run it, so I think we'll try it out at some point.
@geerlingguy have you experimented with rack mounting RPi 5 with bottom mounted NVMe hat (like the Pimoroni one)? Is a bit niche, but checking to see before I start designing a 3D Printed mount 🫣
