girlfreddy,

Companies – But it’s too H A R D to develop anything else!

Texas power plants have no responsibility to provide electricity in emergencies, judges rule (www.kut.org)

Almost three years since the deadly Texas blackout of 2021, a panel of judges from the First Court of Appeals in Houston has ruled that big power companies cannot be held liable for failure to provide electricity during the crisis. The reason is Texas’ deregulated energy market....

girlfreddy,

Three cheers for privatization of public utilities! /s

As an aside, I am gutted by 250+ people losing their lives because Texan politicians can’t get their act together to hold companies responsible. Legislation works … and politicians can, and should, make the laws.

Author receives German prize in scaled-down format after comparing Gaza to Nazi-era ghettos (apnews.com)

The comparison in a recent New Yorker article was viewed as controversial in Germany, where government authorities strongly support Israel as a form of remorse and responsibility after Adolf Hitler’s Germany murdered up to 6 million Jews in the Holocaust....

girlfreddy,

I don’t believe they were promoting gatekeeping ideas. We’re allowed to think as we choose. But many have said similar things here (maybe not nearly as eloquently, but still …) and it hasn’t made a difference. Biden continues to fully support Israel and the killing hasn’t stopped.

The ideas had to written by a Jewish person, someone who knows in their DNA what it’s like to live as a Jew, to be treated as less-than far too often, to know family who were murdered, and to have realized the promise of a real home after a 2000 year diaspora.

girlfreddy,

His itty bitty pieces won’t allow him to quit … yet. My guess is when he starts losing money, that’ll be the end of it.

girlfreddy,

True, but he’s also been buddy-buddy with Xi, Kim and the UAE in public meetings … gaining support and trade deals from those nations.

I honestly don’t think he’s personally lost much at all (yet). But it will happen sooner or later.

Apology letters by Sidney Powell and Kenneth Chesebro in Georgia election case are one sentence long (apnews.com)

The letters, obtained Thursday by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution through an open records request, were hand-written and terse. Neither letter acknowledges the legitimacy of Democrat Joe Biden’s win in Georgia’s 2020 election nor denounces the baseless conspiracy theories they pushed to claim Trump was cheated out of...

girlfreddy,

That’s fair. Still disappointing tho.

girlfreddy,

Cheap labour will always win the contract.

girlfreddy,

The kind billion dollar businesses pay because them’s the rules. :/

girlfreddy,

I like most of you Americans, but I don’t wanna share the longest undefended border anymore if that asshole is elected again.

girlfreddy,

Yup. NAFTA negotiations are coming up shortly and I bet some of our unused pipelines will be looked at to transport fresh water instead of oil.

Quaker Oats recalls granola products over concerns of salmonella contamination (apnews.com)

Quaker, which is owned by PepsiCo, said in a news release that it has not received any reports of salmonella infections related to the recalled granola products. The full list of recalled foods includes granola oats cereals and Quaker Chewy Bars, which are also sold in PepsiCo’s snack mixes....

US wants shakeup of Palestinian Authority to run Gaza after Hamas (www.reuters.com)

An architect of the 1993 Oslo peace accords with Israel that raised hopes of Palestinian statehood, Abbas has seen his legitimacy steadily undermined by Israeli settlement building in the occupied West Bank, which he oversees. Many Palestinians now regard his administration as corrupt, undemocratic and out of touch....

girlfreddy,

Classic example of the definition of insanity … which no recent American leader (last 70 yrs or so) seems to have learned.

girlfreddy, (edited )

All of Canada’s judges are appointed (which, iirc, isn’t what happens in America).

It is rare to see any judge up here so politically partisan. Part of that may be that we repatriated our Constitution in 1982 (to formally acknowledge our independence from Britain) so judges are basing decisions on a newer document. The other thing is Canadian courts do not put “original intent” above all … they consider the changes in society’s mores and beliefs just as important.

Up here all judges abhor being reversed so work very hard to base their rulings on facts. I’m not sure if it’s the same in America.

girlfreddy,

Yes, provincial and the Supreme Court of Canada (SCoC) … just like America does (state/SCOTUS).

Black Ohio woman criminally charged after miscarriage underscores the perils of pregnancy post-Roe (apnews.com)

The 33-year-old Watts, who had not shared the news of her pregnancy even with her family, made her first prenatal visit to a doctor’s office behind Mercy Health-St. Joseph’s Hospital in Warren, a working-class city about 60 miles (100 kilometers) southeast of Cleveland....

girlfreddy,

Evil grows in the dark … Where the sun, it never shines … Evil grows in cracks and holes … And lives in people’s minds.
