The irony of this disabled driver once again blocking the drop kerb on Burgess St in Leith. They've done this for the last 3 days at least.

This driver is not pleased that another disabled driver has had the temerity to park in one of the two disabled parking bays, which they have claimed as their own personal space. Rather than park elsewhere responsibly they've decided to deny all other infirm / disabled / mobility-impaired folk the use of the drop kerb behind the disabled bays.

Pic from one year ago today when Burgess St was closed off & seating and planters put in.

The peace that descended after constant traffic ended & how safe crossing that junction became have been fantastic.

The seating is well-used, in summer & also during the rest of the year. Cold & wet don't put off those who fancy stopping for a while!

J is telling me that as well as Innis & Gunn closing, there's a rash of other places she knows well which have all closed down recently too: Union of Genius on Forrest Rd, Plant Bae on Easter Rd, Holly Grows (Portobello), Bone Fide (Warrender Park Rd) and House Edinburgh (Easter Rd).

Wonder who's next?

goo,
@goo@mastodon.scot avatar

@geo It is.

I do wonder how long Malone's has. That's another site where nothing lasts long, and I've never noticed it being busy when I pass - whereas the cafes alongside it are always stowed out.

@geo I&G used to be packed in summer too, but given costs these days I'm guessing these bigger food & drink pubs need to stay packed all year round to make ends meet.

I started 4th Jan twenty years ago as a non-smoker, after smoking for almost 18 years.

Haven't touched one since. Happy 20th smoke-free anniversary to me!

If you've started 2024 by quitting smoking, good luck & stick at it. I just went cold turkey back then, but had spent the previous 6 months telling everyone I was quitting on the first day back at work the next year. I think psychologically I'd mentally convinced myself during that time that this attempt would work and it did!

The only thing I'm worried about is that I've noticed he's more forgetful these days, and with Mum having Alzheimer's I'm terrified that he may be showing signs of something similar.

However, I'm probably just paranoid & it's more likely just age, plus being tired all the time from being kept awake by pain from his hip (it needs replaced), plus Mum's all-night nonsensical babbling, and lack of intellectual stimulation since he never gets out for more than an hour a week to talk to other people.

BBC's correspondent at the HMV reopening on Oxford St talking there about a "George Epstein who cut a demo for 4 young lads from Liverpool".

There was me & the rest of the world thinking for decades that his name was Brian. Thank you BBC for this important lesson! 😂

Why would anyone in their right mind want to use EVRi over the Royal Mail for delivery?

EVRi boss countering complaints by saying "We successfully deliver X items every year" - Yeah, pal - but your deliveries round here are marked as 'delivered', but they're actually never received by the customer (or are dumped en-masse in the street at a random address).

What he means is "we just dump or lose them & mark as delivered to make our delivery stats look good".

Not once this morning on BBC Breakfast during an item on rising petrol costs & tips on how to save on costs did they suggest "Try walking short trips of under 2 miles" or "Don't sit with the engine running whilst you're parked up & playing on your phone for 30 mins or reading the paper".

Fuel still isn't expensive enough if so many drivers are still not doing at least those two.

It's been quite the week for our resident Goldfinch family.

One chick met an unfortunate end after crashing into a window.
Yesterday, we watched one get taken by a Sparrowhawk right in front of us in our tree.

We see one chick left ... godspeed, little one.

@geo I have squads of goldfinches who spend hours a day visiting my balcony feeders, and have enjoyed watching this season's new generation (with their still-plain heads) joining them.

They empty my niger seed & sunflower heart feeders within a day - they're voracious & cost a fortune to keep fed 😂

Luckily all that mine have to concern themselves with is to drop sufficient seeds to the pigeons who flock to my balcony the minute they see the goldfinches arrive!

goo,
@goo@mastodon.scot avatar

@geo I have these, which are the only pigeon-proof feeders for sunflower hearts & niger seeds! Honeyfields Hanging Sunflower Hearts Seed Feeder https://amzn.eu/d/3QJSKEV and Niger Seed Bird Feeder https://amzn.eu/d/igYYoAm

Both hang from a hanging basket bracket I put up - the sunflower one directly, and the niger one hanging from a loop created from a zip-tie.

(The bracket has anti-pigeon spikes attached on top as the pigeons would sit on it).

BBC Radio Scotland asking "do we need more anti-car measures" in their usual skewed & biased fashion. Language matters.

LTNs and LEZs are NOT anti-car measures. They're schemes to reduce pollution & make our environments safer for those who choose not to drive to get around.

Perhaps "do we need more schemes to make our towns & cities less dependent on private vehicles for getting around, and improve the quality of life for those who live there?" is the question they should ask.

Vienna has once again been named the world's most liveable city - Edinburgh has dropped from 35th to 58th 👎 https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/worlds-most-liveable-cities-2023-vienna-b2362144.html

Edinburgh could learn a lot from Edinburgh, but too many Edinburgh Cllrs aren't interested in making the City a better place to live...

goo,
@goo@mastodon.scot avatar

@kim_harding Sitting here on holiday, in a place with spotless streets, no dog mess despite every 2nd person owning a dog and no vandalism or graffiti. Everyone (young to very old) rides a bike & leaves their cars at home for longer distances. Pedestrians, cyclists, shoppers & café seating all share space with no conflict or outrage. Paid parking was introduced with no issues. Locals get free local bus travel.
They're happy & healthy and community-minded.
Edinburgh could learn a lot from them.

Media resolutely avoiding the discussion about why we let people drive massive multi-ton tanks, designed for off-road use, in towns, cities & villages.

They're more interested in desperately hoping to excuse the latest carnage & child death as a possible medical incident.

WTActualF?

New cycle route marked along Water St in Leith directing unsuspecting cyclists head-on & the wrong way on a one-way street into fast-moving oncoming traffic. No indication to either drivers or cyclists that this is a contraflow & both will need to be very careful as that section is barely wider than a car.

Imagine emergency braking on wet setts as a driver hurtles towards you? You'd hit the deck & slide under their wheels 😮

Tram Day! Took the bus into work today specifically so I can get my first tram all the way home to Leith tonight. It's been a long wait, especially since we were promised that they'd be running through Leith by 2011

I'm more excited about this than I should be!

Seen on a local FB Group - obvious stupidity from whoever was employed to install this signage on Great Junction Street recently.

Just what you need on a narrow pavement - two poles making it even narrower.

They banned A-boards because they narrowed pavements & caused a hazard, but this is fine? 😳

Despite all of the signs & cones (pushed aside by drivers to get into spaces, of course), there are lots of cars parked on Burgess St this morning. Likely they'll all be towed shortly as they're now into the posted restriction time to allow the Leith LTN line-painting & prep work to begin today.

Doubly-sure this will happen as the warden comes down that street on his moped every morning too, ticketing folk 😂

goo,
@goo@mastodon.scot avatar

@geo I used to go out & wait for daughter there at the same time every Saturday. The abuse I got when trying to be helpful by telling drivers it wasn't a good idea to park there as the warden would be along soon (as he drove down at the same time every Sat when I was waiting there). "None of my effin' business to tell them where they could & couldn't park", apparently.

I therefore always took great delight in seeing those folks' cars with tickets on them later.
