I bought a Z Fold 2 in 2020 and still use it today. Battery life is great, screens are still great (both outer and inner). I always have a cheap case for it that covers the front screen. I have dropped it twice outside on the concrete ground and the cheap case broke, but NOT the phone, so I just bought another case each time–to me, that’s what the cheap case is for. I really like it and will probably get another version at some point, but here are my main takeaways:
Outer screen is very slim (think almost TV remote-sized). I have gotten used to it but God forbid you hand it to someone else to type on, they always say it’s too small
It’s too long for my pockets, but I’m a woman that wears women’s clothes, and our pockets are too damn small for anything, so I have to carry it in my purse
The screen protectors it comes with do start to fray at the edges over time, but I have never had it bubble up at the folding point/crease on the inner screen
If you are not known for being delicate with your phone, this is not the phone for you. If you work outdoors regularly, have a tendency to drop your phone regularly, etc, don’t buy this
It’s expensive
Not all apps are compatible with the big screen so sometimes you’re stuck with the small screen view on the big inner screen
Having a portable tablet is great! I got rid of my tablet when I bought this phone and have no regrets
It’s great for driving when using Google Maps or whichever driving app you choose. Having the big screen makes it so much easier to see the directions
Any video looks better on the big screen
I have used the big screen to view maps I downloaded for hiking
I’m curious what users feel makes a great sci-fi story. What elements do you feel “make or break” the story specifically where sci-fi is concerned? For me, I really enjoyed the Expanse series, as it feels like there’s a sort of “believability” to it all. The authors make everything seem very realistic, even if some...
I will add Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars series to the list then, for sure! I agree about the writing styles. I feel like sometimes authors seem to have the assumption that the reader will understand the very intricate details of the world they built without them needing to explain much, and this is a huge turn-off for me. If I can barely understand what’s going on after 3-5 chapters, I lose interest.
I’ve read a lot of Philip K. Dick and enjoyed them, even though some are waaaaay out there, but he has a real gift with writing that I don’t think many can emulate as well and still get the point across like he can. I’ll definitely add the others you’ve mentioned to my lists!
I agree that plausibility plays a huge part. Even though it’s sci-fi, I think it helps when we can imagine the story actually happening, even if it’s highly imaginative and “far-fetched” for reality as we know it.
I was in S. Korea with the U.S. Army Reserve back in '00 and one of the last nights we were there, we went off base to this local restaurant that was basically some Korean family’s living room and they cooked food in their private kitchen. We ordered one of everything, and one of the dishes was dog (gaegogi), which had already been slaughtered, so it wasn’t like we ordered it and they had to kill it for us. Does that make it any more moral or humane on our part? No, not at all. But it was a cultural dish, and we were there for the cultural experience. I remember hearing the same as you though, that there was some cultural belief that if the dog suffered before it died, the meat tasted better (something about the adrenaline running through it’s muscles or something like that, I dunno), so they would tie the dog up by its hide legs and sear the fur off it with a blow torch while it was still alive. That’s what we heard, anyway. Was it true? I dunno.
While I of course don’t agree with the inhumane treatment, if their culture is to eat dog, then it is. We eat beef in the U.S. and that’s horrific to Hindus, who believe cows are sacred. We don’t exactly treat beef cattle very well before we slaughter them either, for that matter. I think where eating meat is concerned, you’re either all-in or all-out. You can’t bash one culture for their cuisine and not take a deep look at your own as well and realize that they are all fucked up in their own way.
I’ve put together a collage of some books from last months What are you Reading? post. It’s mostly random, but the more discussion something gets the more it stands out to me. Going forward I’m going to make a new post every month to talk about what people are reading....
I’m starting Woken Furies by Richard Morgan. I watched the Netflix Altered Carbon series and figured the books would be worth a read, and so far they have been!

When I was in the Army, one time we built a racetrack, complete with jumps, for the bulldozers. One person drove, the rest of us just hung on with our bare hands, with the moving treads a few feet below us, no seatbelts, no safety harness, nothing. The motor pool Sergeant said we could do it as long as we all wore our kevlar (helmet) (he was also nuts and didn’t care about shit). That no one fell off and got crushed under the treads is a miracle. God, we were so dumb. Helluva ride, though.
I keep meaning to go over there and re-save all the links and recipes and stuff that I have saved up from years and years, but I haven’t gotten around to it. I did delete the app from my phone though, so I’m not tempted to scroll it all day (I just scroll Lemmy all day now instead).
Just got it last night and only had time to plink at a few Dregs in the EDZ before I had to log off, but it seems decent! I’m more interested in trying it out in Crucible though, as I really like scouts in PVP, definitely gonna try that this weekend.
I have just discovered the amazing wonder that Japanese curry blocks hold. I’ve made curried pork and curried chicken with them, but I’m guessing there are all kinds of things you can do with them besides using them the way the box suggests. What other things do you make with them, fellow cooks?
I don’t have any unusual recipes to share because I use it for the same as you (chicken and pork), but I wanted to ask what brand you’re using? I currently use S&B Golden Curry (Hot).
