Quick update on my search for data about opening links in new tabs or windows.

Everyone has an opinion
• No one has shared any data
• I reached out to a web analytics expert who has been in the field over 20 years who replied, ”I have no idea and haven’t seen any data on your question.”
• The expert pointed me to a Slack community full of web analytics and data folks.
• I’ve posted the query there and am waiting to see if anyone has data.

Quick clarification of my article yesterday: Where are the A/B tests for opening links in new tabs?

It’s been nearly twenty years, surely someone has tested this? Anyone?

There are numerous articles describing why websites shouldn’t open links in new tabs or windows for UX and accessibility reasons.

I decided to write the opposite: What are the arguments for opening links in new tabs or windows?

Last year, a chat with @colinbendell caused me to question my understanding of image quality and web performance.

A recent Cloudinary survey reminded me of Colin’s insight. It spurred me to dig in further and changed some of my priors.

See the images that changed my mind and read my new recommendations for ecommerce images.

On LinkedIn, Chris Do announced a custom AI chat bot that was supposed to be the closest thing to talking to him. In addition to being fed all the things he has written, he said, "It's read all the books that I've read, watched the videos I've watched."

David C. Baker asked, ”How are you handling copyright issues when feeding books into it, Chris Do?”

Arc browser’s latest announcements are bad for the web. I’m so disappointed in them. Looks like it is time to go back to Firefox.

On a recent project, we created a digital welcome packet for a hospital as an alternative to the 40+ page paper packet they give every patient.

The digital version would cost less (no press run), could be updated in real time, would produce less waste, and would be available on phones for patients and their families.

But solely relying on a digital version won’t work because not every patient will have access to it or may be impaired in a way that prevents them from using their phone.

I’ve been thinking about and wanting to read more on ethical frameworks for AI (or machine learning and LLMs) but perhaps in a more narrow way than most of the discussions I’ve encountered thus far.

Most of what I read are focused on the large societal impact of AI: job loss, human labor devalued, copyright issues, environmental issues, Terminator movies come to life.

All of these things are legitimate concerns. And I like reading about them, but that's not what I'm looking for.

There has been a few exceptional articles published at Cloud Four recently, but I’ve been too busy to talk about them. I want to remedy that now.

First, @tylersticka wrote about animated gifs and the search for viable.

It’s an exceptional article, and I know a few of you will most enjoy the funny animated gif of me that Tyler made.

I'm disappointed in you already.

I need some help. We’ve been working to define better what we do at Cloud Four. Turns out that just being really good at the web and wanting to share what we learn is a little hard to differentiate on.

So we’ve been looking at past projects to determine if they might be areas worth focusing on. And there is one type of project I think we excel at, but I have no idea what to call it. And without a name, it is nearly impossible to research.

So what would you call it?

The picture element for unexpected art direction
by @anniegreens documents an elegant solution for making sure images match light and dark themes without using JS.

The example of bright screenshots on dark screens is something that I’ve noticed. Despite that, I’m not sure I’m ready to sign up for creating duplicate screenshots because, well, I’m lazy.

But this <picture> solution kinda makes me want to overcome my laziness and do it. It’s that cool.

We're testing an application that handles extremely large file transfers. Is there a way to tell a browser to use an external hard drive as their storage? Think OPFS and file system access API use cases.

My father passed away Thursday. I feel weird posting about it because most of you never met him.

But I talked a lot about his care over the last few years. People have asked about him and our family. So I know people who didn't know him have followed along. I always appreciated your concern and support.

He was a kind, funny, and generous person. He was a great dad. I miss him.

Does anyone know a reliable way to convert a .usdz file to .glb?

There are online services, but I’d prefer something running on Mac.

WebPageTest experiments are broken again. I'm pretty sure they've been broken since last Wednesday. I ran an experiment then, but an emergency came up and only now got around to looking at the results.

Now that Catchpoint has laid off all of the WPT staff, I guess we should expect things to be broken on a regular basis.

Is there a way in Chrome DevTools waterfall to add a column for the request number?

I like how WPT lists the requests in sequential order so I can say, "Oh, your LCP image was the 148th requested asset. It should be much higher in the waterfall."

I keep looking in Dev Tools options for a way to add that column, but either it isn't there or I don't recognize the label being used.

We watched the season finale of Ahsoka last night. It felt like there was a lot of context that was only available to people who have watched the animated shows. I never have so I left the season a bit mystified. Moments that I think were supposed to be emotional, didn’t land at all.

I wanted so much to like the series because I love Rosario Dawson and she is badass as Ahsoka. But I can’t recommend it unless you know more backstory than I did going in.

My father passed last October. I don’t think there has been a day since that I haven’t thought about him at least once.

The memories aren't always painful. Sometimes they are just fleeting moment. But it is every single day.

I wonder if there will ever be a day when he doesn't cross my mind at least once.

I’m heading to Google I/O next week. My first big conference since 2019. Who else do I know that is going to be there?

On a somewhat related note, has anyone figured out how to save sessions on the I/O schedule this year? I can't find a way to build a schedule for myself.

I remember reading a blog post a few weeks (months) back that argued the reason why most AI code generation was inaccessible was because it was trained to predict the median output and the median experience on the web is inaccessible.

Or something like that? Does that ring any bells to anyone? I'm trying to find that post.

Thanks to @chriscoyier and @davatron5000 for inviting me onto the latest episode of @shoptalkshow.

We chatted about the tech economy, vibe-cession, and building an ethical framework for evaluating AI. Give it a listen!
