Wrote 6 books about testing PHP code. Staff Software Engineer @ Ziff Davis Shopping. Conference speaker, organizer, and first WurstCon sponsor. Baseball fan, Magic the Gathering commander player, board game enthusiast, plus all sorts of other assorted nonsense. Probably started working with PHP before you were born. Endlessly roaming the snowy wilds of Canada.

I have been finding I enjoy the meetings I have with other developers who are at the same level as I am — it allows me to see what other teams are doing and see if they have solutions to problems I come across because it does help if the org as a whole decides on the same approaches.

I am starting to believe that a lot of tech companies think the product they make is their stock.

Car key fobs should be extremely difficult to activate in one’s pocket and arguably remote start should be the only thing that functions beyond like 10 feet. Or the dang things should be configurable.

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@jmichaelward So I am gonna be That Guy and point out that this is not a tech issue but a process issue. Setting aside that it was a key fob, whenever you change the battery on a remote don’t you immediately verify that it’s working correctly?

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@jmichaelward I am in agreement that what happened to you sucks. My own process for when I change the battery for my key fob is to go out to my vehicle and verify every button works as expected. Is it annoying to do it? It absolutely is even though it is a 30 second walk to my garage.

First of many to come but MLB banned a player for making hundreds of bets on baseball games while on the injured list.

In every single MLB clubhouse there is a sign that outlines the punishments for betting on baseball games — lifetime bans. That is why Pete Rose will never get in.

I wonder if I could get rid of my beard and just have a moustache without looking like a white supremecist?

@Daddaniele For a little bit in the early 2000’s I had what I called a “palm tree” — moustache and then thin strip down the middle of my chin

If people are not going to the movies anymore I have a crazy idea, hear me out, what if studios start doing small, well thought-out romantic comedies and dramas instead of the 300 million dollar CGI shit fest we have been getting during the last decade?

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@maxalmonte14 @ramsey You are giving them too much credit. They are just copying what worked before because they have no concept of a future for their industry.

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@maxalmonte14 @ramsey No, it actually a lot more complicated than that. Check out this video https://youtu.be/m9AvT6mS0xE?si=dgfh3IQa5JFpI75_ — it is about Magic The Gathering content but touches on this issue in film.

American friends — if your former President is saying that he did nothing wrong, what is the explanation his lawyers gave for the payment that was made to Stormy Daniels? I haven’t followed any of this stuff because I cannot vote in American elections.

I have been on this work project long enough that the answer to “who wrote this brittle code” is almost always me. Brought to you by “I think this is a one line bug fix but I need a test and OMFG who wrote this brittle and coupled code?!?”

One week ago, I watched "20 Days in Mariupol", a gripping film when Russia started the full scale invasion of Ukraine.

At times, I had to pause watching it as it way too much.

The extraordinary cruelty of targeting civilian infrastructure made it even clearer to me that we're doing way too little to help them. Restricting what the Ukrainians can hit is stupid policy.

Any strike on a civilian target MUST be able to result in an appropriate response. Make the suckers pay for it.

@sarah @derickr Your own country’s army has committed war crimes for 40 years and faced no consequences, in fact passing a law that says they will invade The Hague if any US soldier ever faced war crime charges.

Other countries see that and now understand how the game is played.
