Wrote 6 books about testing PHP code. Staff Software Engineer @ Ziff Davis Shopping. Conference speaker, organizer, and first WurstCon sponsor. Baseball fan, Magic the Gathering commander player, board game enthusiast, plus all sorts of other assorted nonsense. Probably started working with PHP before you were born. Endlessly roaming the snowy wilds of Canada.

The only career decision I wonder about was 18 months before I started working I had a chance to start working with Ruby and Rails and turned it down because even though it came with lots of vacation time and benefits I had to pay for the benefit premium and most of the vacation time was limited to fixed dates.

I am pretty much a NO RAGRETS person when it comes to job choices.

I need to remember that Mastodon exists! Iโ€™m currently writing a bunch of content to do with PHP and this would be the perfect place to talk about that.

Iโ€™m currently trying to decide whether is an interesting enough topic that people may like an in-depth course/series on it. It seems to be something a lot of people are vaguely aware of, but donโ€™t really know the details.

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@ollieread My default answer to questions about this sort of thing is โ€œabsolutely you should write about this.โ€ I asked this question back in 2008 about testing code and the answer was โ€œget to itโ€ and it built my entire career.

There is a by-election for a Member of Provincial Parliament seat in my riding today to replace a giant douchebag who quit to go work for a gambling cartel. The choices are some other douchebag with no policies other than what Doug Ford tells him, the not-liked-by-many current mayor of this town, a young idealistic campaigner for a party drifting to the centre from the โ€œleftโ€, and a right-wing xenophobic candidate. Things are going great.

Hey, @grmpyprogrammer, I've really adopted the home row mod you turned me onto some time ago. Last week at php[tek], it was great seeing you by the way, I missed not having it on my MacBook Pro laptop and couldn't figure out how to do it. I noticed you were using a MacBook. Do you have the home row mod configured on it and is there something you can point me to to learn how? Being a non-QMK keyboard I assume it's not possible, but I thought I would ask.

grmpyprogrammer,
@grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

@eric I only have it through QMK but you can do it for a regular MacOS keyboard using KMonad https://github.com/kmonad/kmonad

@pies The huge advantage Tesla has in Canada is their charging network โ€” I do not think it is open to third parties here so I would be at a big disadvantage (if I had to pick a vehicle I would go with the Ioniq 5)
