I like the look of the Daylight tablet a lot. It’s very expensive, but it is intriguing. I do not like the marketing that describes it as a “healthier” computer, non-addictive, “for your wellbeing”. https://daylightcomputer.com

How to Make Google’s ‘Web’ View Your Search Default

gruber,

@leoncowle So you run this script when the front window is a default Google search, re-run the same search through the new Google Web?

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@leoncowle Should we call this disenshittified Google Search “Google Web”, or “udm14” or “&udm=14”? The last one is a nightmare verbally.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@leoncowle Spitball: map the script to ⌘R

Tweak the script:

— if the current URL is a Google search, append &udm=14 and reload
— else just do a regular browser reload

@bshanks None of them have achieved the cultural relevance of even “A Bug’s Life”. Even if I’m wrong and the movies are great, none are popular. And Pixar’s business isn’t making good but unpopular movies.

@swingerofbirch I agree but I love browsers and I’m savvy enough to install and configure browser extensions to make the web work the way I want it to. I bet you are too. I think Apple News is well-liked by people who don’t have such expertise.

My Apple Card is expiring this summer, and the replacement physical card arrived in the mail today. Activating was super-duper easy—just bring it in close proximity to your iPhone and tap a button or two on screen. Done.

But what do I do with the old card? It's titanium so it's not easily destroyed.

I've had metal Amex cards since 2010 or so. When Amex sends a replacement card, they include a return envelope custom made for mailing them your expired card for recycling.

@digitalqualms Whoops, same here!

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

Update: So, it turns out, Apple DOES include a FedEx return envelope in the new card's packaging. But I almost threw it away because it just looked like part of the cardboard. Kind of a pain that I can't just drop it in a USPS mailbox, but I wonder how many others won't see that this return envelope is a return envelope and throw it away?

@raoufdool Oh, I disagree. You certainly need to take “inside” with a degree of skepticism, but there’s also so much to learn. Even if what to learn is reading between the lines, not the lines themselves.

@Agsystems The port is used for pro camera features. They’d need Thunderbolt-speed data transfer of some sort.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@kaplag You think they should engineer, market, and sell unpopular phones? I wish the Mini had been popular but it wasn’t.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@hova414 They’re not speculating. They’re going by what customers choose.

jsit, to random
@jsit@social.coop avatar

@gruber I can't read your mind, of course, but I'm noticing something I also noticed a couple weeks ago -- I think this is more left padding than you would want on lists inside of blockquotes. It's the user agent default, which is 40px in Safari. When not inside a blockquote, lists on your site have a left padding of 0.5em:

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@jsit Not quite sure how it got like that, but thanks to you, I spent some time tweaking those margins and paddings.

Let me know what you think, and thanks again for pointing this out.

gruber, (edited )
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@danprovost @rjj In fact I’d be willing to bet that if this rumor pans out, this iPhone “Ultra” will have a better camera than the iPhones Pros.

gruber,
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

@5tu @danprovost @rjj I could see that, but I can also imagine multiple ways to make a thinner phone but bigger camera protrusions.

gruber,

@tvaziri I’m surprised they don’t picture the remote/mic because I think that’s what people like best about wired earbuds.
