haui_lemmy,

You‘re so right. Google hasnt got anything to do near this. We all know what they’re gonna use this for, right? They’re gonna find pathways that make looking away from ads impossible or hardwire the ads into our brains.

KEEP THEM FROM PURSUING THIS!

haui_lemmy,

I disagree very strongly.

Owning any stock has nothing to do with your content being held hostage. When you and I made the posts on there (I have to assume) we made this for the benefit of everyone. We didnt know that LLMs would come to pass and gobble up our stuff but you can technically make your own LLM and gobble it up yourself. The only problem I have with this one and all other „reddit sells your data to…“ is that its not reddit‘s to sell (legal bla bla, I mean I never agreed to it being sold) and if its reddits to sell, its also mine to sell.

I know thats not how the corporate owned legal shitshow works but it is why I dont mind anyone scraping lemmy or mastodon. Everyone can do it which makes it worthless for one party. The control to access is what creates worth, which is why we need to abandon all proprietary media asap.

haui_lemmy,

Understandable thought process imo. I‘m in the opposite boat.

For years I didnt care about data privacy and the amount of phishing attacks and spam mails skyrocketed.

I had all the social media accounts, connected to each other for convenience. Bit tech cloud managed my pictures and everything else. Stuff started vanishing off of my favorite streaming services.

Then I started to migrate away from big tech and started my own home server. Ripped all my old dvds on there so I dont have to put them in the player. I disabled my facebook account, twitter, instagram, you name it.

Now I can chat with people on my Linux phone (postmarketOS), watch videos on my peertube instance, write this comment over my lemmy instance, etc. Is it easy? No. But its doable.

I do still have whatsapp but i dont use the app and have bridged the 2.5 people that dont have matrix to it. Same for signal and discord. I only use matrix and a couple people switched because matrix can help them use one app only.

Now comes the hard part: is this end user ready? No, not at all. Stuff can break like every half a year and some people are just tech illiterate and will have constant problems because they have no patience.

I cant promise you that it works for everyone. But it should work for the 80% or so who are able to follow a basic video tutorial on how to cross sync new devices in matrix for example.

Oh and the whiners will also have a bad time. If you need „perfect“ and „polished“, apps wont always be up to your standards and you should embrace big tech. They make it perfect for you you give them your data. Thats their way of saying thanks /s

Addition: The general idea for those who can tinker should also be to not only use but contribute. Either financially or otherwise. The software is dependent on it.

haui_lemmy,

In your particular case: yes, lemmy is absolutely the answer.

It isnt for a lot of other folks. Lemmy has a lot less moderators/moderation and a lot more alternative communities and multiple instances.

This has a ton of implications. You can still get banned for petty reasons but usually not from the instance but just from a community. In that case you join or make another one which doesnt ban people for {particular_reason}.

It also means that you dont get the tons of posts and comments. Imo as a reddit refugee, people from reddit are going cold turkey on drinking from a firehose or more accurately, being showered in content. There is a million dollar business and many years of experience, social circles and code behind that. Lemmy is like reddit in the early days, just much later.

So if you ever feel there is a lack of content, consider hunting for it on lemmyverse.net for example. You can add non-banned instances to your instance by searching for a community‘s handle.

There will still be people here you dont agree with and the people here are a little different but all in all I‘d say its a pretty good thing. :)

Have fun.

haui_lemmy,

Not like I havent seen that happen but I immediately block communities for doing this once so I‘m not seeing this much lately.

haui_lemmy,

LibreOffice Calc is pretty good. Your company can invest in a fork and it should do what you need.

haui_lemmy,

Then you‘re definitely in the wrong circle. Join a local computer club if that exists. Changes things dramatically.

haui_lemmy,

Thats interesting! Thanks for elaborating.

I have never heard of it so I cant say if there is an alternative but I‘m pretty sure being vendor locked like this is MUCH more expensive than using a more complicated bit open solution in the long term.

haui_lemmy,

Feel free to show a usecase where that is the case. the actual cost and opportunity cost of a vendor lock in is quite severe.

haui_lemmy,

Its so simple yet most people dont get it. Thanks for posting this.

Linux mint or zorin OS for layman beginners who just want everything to work and focuses on stability , privacy , security ? Also what to do if I switched to mint and WiFi stopped working ?

Hey, so I just put this part up first because this is the one I urgently and importantly need answered even tho I wrote that hideous text block first (sorry English isn’t my first language )....

haui_lemmy,

well if you take the people on lemmy at face value I‘m not sure I can help you.

Of course, linux works great and for most intends and purposes, you can run it like you can run windows.

But that doesnt mean that it’s never gonna freak out on you. Games run mostly the same, except rootkit-shitware. So yes, in a very small „standard“ configuration-lane, it works flawless.

But if you start tinkering - to go all privacy nut for example - expect to see breakage. Its still community built stuff and not for profit proprietary shit that gets designed to make you use it.

haui_lemmy,

My point wasn’t only games but glad you’re happy

haui_lemmy,

Thats pretty cool! Thanks for mentioning it.

haui_lemmy,

Just gonna jump in and say that those are conflicting goals. „Just work“ means stick to big tech or pay someone to make it work. Nobody else has a motivation to make it work for you.

If you want to know what works best I say for laypeople its something ubuntu based like mint, ubuntu, pop_os.

You can absolutely go nuts with security and privacy but you will have to learn tons of shot before you‘re able to get this to work so dont bother for now.

Good luck though. :)

haui_lemmy,

This is market manipulation at its best. The whole board should be jailed for it.
