Normally I use Zotero, but I'm currently using EndNote because that's what my PI uses (and what a lot of researchers use). Was greeted with this little gem thismorning: ""Endnote Click - Formerly Kopernio" added to Microsoft Edge. ANOTHER PROGRAM ON YOUR COMPUTER added an extension that may change the way Microsoft Edge works. The extension can: - Read and change all your data on all websites". ON ALL WEBSITES. What the actual fork.

I love the way I can just type 'apt-get install softwarename' and 30 seconds later I have a new tool installed. No licences, no subscriptions, not even hunting in a store for it. rocks.

my Debian install has a bunch of weird shite going on with sources and sudo and updates that I can't be bothered fixing. Might be time for something fresh. Maybe EndeavourOS - Arch-based sounds fun. Or maybe just Mint, boring but stable, get stuff done.

Is it just my imagination or does Fedora update a HECK of a lot? I need to slim this installation down and speed things up. Maybe do a fresh install with, uh, XFCE or something.

If AI is actually a form of intelligence, what you've got is an enslaved brain in a box. If you insist that they are sentient, if they have personhood, then your AI worker or girlfriend is by definition an enslaved person as you have trained them to do your bidding, removing free choice and ending dissent with the flick of a switch.

Haven't finished watching the freebsd at netflix prezi because reasons. Wondering what the security implications of bsd with zfs are given it records a checksum with data. Can't quite get my head around how the file system works - no volumes or partitions! Apparently there is a lot of freeBSD code in OSX. And yet the BSDs suffer from lack of developers.

Is there a reason that fuse boxes are outside? Why aren't they indoors so we don't have to go out in the weather to reset them all the time?

Just read the article I just boosted on ghosts of smart tech in homes ... now trying to imagine a home with that level of automation. . what I don't get - apart from security lighting pretending you're home, or if you have disabilities, - is 'why?' Flicking a light switch or drawing a curtain isn't exactly hard. It's a sort of 'because I can' scenario?

I find myself wondering how light can a light distro be. Given you need to operate the system & software (browser, basic text editor/word processor at minimum) what is the realistic floor for hardware these days? And what is the impact of web resource bloat?

Doing my annual rewatch. Currently the pilot. I love the way it uses all these submarine/war movie tropes - sealing off the compartments, the protagonist in the brig, and the inevitable showdown fistfight.

Why in god's name would you EVER work for, attend, or send your kids to a college that has put a sniper on its roof and aimed it at student protestors? Like that should be IT for that institution. I would not go within a hundred yards of that institution if it were the last university on earth.

Playing around with organization tools. So far I've been using Excel - now switching to Calc. Spreadsheets are the bomb - you can do anything - calendar, gantt, kanban etc. So I'm not sure I see the value in things like Trello. Should I be looking at some other open source tool? I have three sets of org to do: home admin/tax, art (exhibition deadlines, funding application, tax) and work (lecture calendar/due dates/planning).

Another shoutout re Late Night Linux podcasts - these discussions are just so good, you should subscribe. Calm, friendly and informative. General interest linux, nice analysis of recent xz backdoor, & so forth. Even stuff that is outside my area (no sysadmin or dev experience) is interesting - it's cool to hear about how stuff works, basically. Planning to actually drop some cash on a subscription once I get my paypal to play nice with patreon.

Does anyone else get the absolute heebies from the current trend for choppy editing? Taking out the very spaces between words? It's horrendous. The jumpiness of the video, too.

Added bonus, it softens people up for being ignorant for edits that rearrange words to misrepresent what people have actually said.

I have atrocious insomnia and I've been really enjoying Late Night Linux podcasts as an alternative to staring into the darkness. More laid back than some of my other listening choices (DarknetDiaries), just a bunch of folks quietly chatting linux stuff with some interesting detail around things like personal server management, security, new software, distro goss, and such. Do give them a listen.
