Why in god's name would you EVER work for, attend, or send your kids to a college that has put a sniper on its roof and aimed it at student protestors? Like that should be IT for that institution. I would not go within a hundred yards of that institution if it were the last university on earth.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

I mean we put up with a lot of shit for the sake of paying the mortgage, but you're pointing a gun at our kids? That's a line you can't cross.

Just had the best jam-filled I've ever had. That's it. Just needed to tell someone. How's your day going?

@martinpeck sounds lovely. The small joys. 😁

I think if I were a bajillionaire I'd pay someone to update Caesar III just to pretty it up - not actually change the play style. I had Caesar IV but for some reason didn't like it as much. So everything the same, but just better display on a modern screen. Oh and an additional soundtrack. I had to turn the music off, my brain will play it for me anyway lol.

My afternoon plans.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@alcinnz @ajroach42 I sometimes listen to the local ABC radio, and I love how their sound people create audio landscapes. People will be doing an interview and there will be sounds of kids playing, or a river, or cars or something - this textured sense of location which is quite lovely.

my Debian install has a bunch of weird shite going on with sources and sudo and updates that I can't be bothered fixing. Might be time for something fresh. Maybe EndeavourOS - Arch-based sounds fun. Or maybe just Mint, boring but stable, get stuff done.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@unnameduser yeah there was a point where I'd happily troubleshoot for hours but now it's just annoying. Especially from Debian, which used to be rock solid. The whole linux ecosystem seems chaotic these days ... everyone needs to calm down and get the basics right.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@unnameduser really wanting to avoid Windows as much as possible... even seriously considering Ubuntu - anything for stability.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@unnameduser ah dang that's frustrating. What's going on?

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@unnameduser Mint is based on Ubuntu is based on Debian so ... yeah the apt thing will be key here I suspect.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@unnameduser Assuming it's not an issue at kernel level, I'm going to go either openSuse or Fedora - get away from Debian based distros. Or something Arch based, see how that goes. (I can't download too many to test as we're in a rural area and the internet is slow.)

@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

As educators it is incumbent upon us to approach new tools critically. Pedagogy must be evidence-based. We don't just adopt random strategies without testing them. This includes so-called artificial intelligence / machine learning .

Reading a 2016 paper on inquiry-based learning where "cognitive load" is once again used as a reason to stop any learner from doing anything FUN and HARD and EXPLORATORY my God

Being alive increases your cognitive load. We are not in some kind of robotic fry-out state every time we have to consume novel information. Working in a repetitive assembly line is low cognitive load and also destroys people

This one little tiny concept taken out of context is used for so many bad arguments.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@grimalkina omg exactly. I'm like whatever, it's task-related load that means they're grappling with ideas, so back off.
I push back with the notion that you need friction to get traction.

(The same people will happily pile on the educator's cognitive load via a shedtonne of unnecessary administrivia, testing, etc. )

I'm not going to be a reply guy so I'll just say it here. Please don't do that meme where you put a clap emoji between every word in a sentence. It makes it a nightmare for people using a screen reader.

I know I'm not the best when it comes to accessibility but I try my best, and this is an obvious thing you can (not) do to help.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@JoeRess it annoys the bejeebus out of me just reading the text. That and 'let that sink in' always have this chest-poking air of self-importance.

I must go educate myself on emojis and accessibility.

No I don't need to spin up a BSD to play with. Nope. nooooooo.

helgztech, to random

Haven't finished watching the freebsd at netflix prezi because reasons. Wondering what the security implications of bsd with zfs are given it records a checksum with data. Can't quite get my head around how the file system works - no volumes or partitions! Apparently there is a lot of freeBSD code in OSX. And yet the BSDs suffer from lack of developers.

helgztech,
@helgztech@fosstodon.org avatar

@array I guess it wouldn't hurt to spin up a VM ....🤓 ....

Is open source PR consultant a thing? I keep watching open source companies fucking shit up and then doing an even worse job of explaining themselves.

I used to wonder if these companies didn't have anyone on staff who was capable of role-playing "assholes on the Internet" but now I'm convinced that they either don't, or those people are just keeping quiet. (I don't blame them).

So maybe this is my sales pitch.

Hire me as a consultant for an obscene amount of money and I'll fix your problems.

@JoeRess Community manager? Too many years ago, doing some volunteer marketing at openSuse, we had a brilliant community manager on the team - pretty sure that was the title. (Jos Poortvleet, think he's at Nextcoud now). Someone who knows both FLOSS and organisational psych - and who just has great interpersonal skills - is such a massive asset.

All Your Base Are Belong to LLM

"The output from an LLM is a derivative work of the data used to train the LLM.

If we fail to recognise this, or are unable to uphold this in law, copyright (and copyleft on which it depends) is dead. Copyright will still be used against us by corporations, but its utility to FOSS to preserve freedom is gone."

@dentangle copyright already only serves those with the wherewithal to pursue breaches - i.e. $$$ to lawer up in a European court.

Does anyone else get the absolute heebies from the current trend for choppy editing? Taking out the very spaces between words? It's horrendous. The jumpiness of the video, too.

Added bonus, it softens people up for being ignorant for edits that rearrange words to misrepresent what people have actually said.
