Have you ever put a timer to remind you to do a thing and when it goes off you get up and go do the thing but you don't actually do the thing, you do another thing, and then go back to what you were doing, without having done the thing you put the timer for and got up to do?

Yeah.

Today I repaired 4 hanger joists on our deck. They were basically disintegrated by rust. This is why you need rain gutters! It was easy to install new hangers, removing the rusty hangers was difficult though. My arms are noodles.

A wood joist under a deck. The joist hanger is new, held in with ceramic coated screws and some nails.

hotkey,

@miah You got rid of all the load-bearing rust!!

I managed to make what is arguably the worst pea soup in human history.

So that instant pot recipe said that you don't need to soak the peas before cooking. So I didn't. After half an hour of pressure cooking, the peas were still rocks.

So I added 20 minutes.
And another 20 minutes.
And maybe another? I don't recall.

So the peas did get softer. Eventually.

But now the vegetables and everything tastes like burned mush and sadness and horror.

Kids, soak your peas.

My Mac isn't done but I think I need a change of scenery, maybe go back to 8 bit computers.

Don't really have a "new" CPU to implement though (I've done most of the "big" 8 bit ones). So... erm... MSX? Tandy CoCo? Something weird and/or obscure?

I dunno... I'm open to suggestions.

What I have done, at various levels of "done":

8088: XT, Tandy 1000, PCjr
80286: PC/AT
6502: PET, VIC-20
Z80: Sinclair Spectrum, ColecoVision, Amstrad CPC
6809: Thomson MO5/TO7
68000: Macintosh 128k

hotkey,

@grum999 Thanks yeah I had started working on the Sega Master System but got stuck a bit on the graphics chip.

The thing with consoles is that often they have different rom mappers for different games cartridges and you have to handle all of that. Also you need to be more accurate which I'm usually... not much 😆

I guess I could do gameboy/NES/etc but I mean everybody does that :meow_dunno:

For CPUs there's the 6800 but meh, and it wasn't used much other than in very early computers

Don't you love it when an update completely borks a game?

    hotkey,

I always laughed at the gamer kid trope who screams "literally unplayable!" but yeah this game has published an update that makes is literally unplayable. (e.g. it gets in a state where you're stuck every 10 minutes or so and have to reload) (and it's not just me, the forum is filled with people in the same situation)

    QA is for chumps apparently.

    Laptops peaked in 1982.

The Epson HX-20, arguably the first "true" laptop, had an integrated printer and micro cassette drive

16-32 KB of RAM and two CPUs running at 614 kHz!

Oh and ~50h battery life running BASIC!

I want one (but they're pretty rare and expensive so... yeah... that probably won't happen)

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epson_HX-20

    hotkey,

    @kryptskiddy I have a TRS-80 Model 100 (posted about it on my old account: https://mstdn.ca/@hotkey/109954813835295848 ).

It has a lot of siblings with similar specs. They're a bit more powerful but not as cool as this Epson (I mean, a printer and a micro cassette!)

    hotkey,

@swelljoe Yeah that thing was underpowered even for its time (maybe to save power?), most 8 bit computers of this era ran at 1-2 MHz

    hotkey,

@pvaneynd I see it's made by Clive Sinclair so there are indeed good reasons to worry about the keyboard 😅

And the last page managed to make me cry so that's something.
