“Finished crap can be edited. Unfinished greatness languishes forever. The only bad writing is the thing you didn't write!”

“You do an awful lot of bad writing in order to do any good writing. Incredibly bad. I think it would be very interesting to make a collection of some of the worst writing by good writers.” ―William S. Burroughs.

Most likely, we'll stop selling our apps in China. China simply doesn't want foreign software, it seems: https://www.macrumors.com/2023/10/03/apple-adopts-tighter-china-app-store-rules/

@charis Not gonna happen. They just don't want foreign software. So then be it.

"listen with patience and care, and never…interrupt even when people were having great difficulty in explaining themselves, for during such halting and imprecise moments…people often are very revealing—what they hesitate to talk about can tell much about them. Their pauses…evasions…sudden shifts in subject matter are likely indicators of what embarrasses them, or irritates them, or what they regard as too private or imprudent to be disclosed to another person at that particular time." –G. Talese

Emoji are the new exclamation marks:

“Why bother with a bland exclamation point when you can decorate your messages with a pair of googly eyes or a smiling pile of dung?”

From: Murder Your Darlings, by Roy Peter Clark

ia,
@ia@mastodon.online avatar

"The general message of emoji is: 'Don’t take this too seriously, don’t read too much into it, I’m kind of joking.' Sometimes, that’s exactly what you want. But do you want to stress that you’re easy going and fun every time you write a headline or a list item? On a business report? On a scientific paper? On health related matters? Maybe emoji are not always enriching your message."

“For an article that reads well on a mobile phone, aim at five paragraphs with five sentences each. Favor short words. 5×5×5×5 letters will fit nicely on a small screen.

Match structure and meaning with the joy of sound.”

Why does it take so much time to write clear paragraphs, short sentences, and pick small over long words? Because...

“Brevity comes from selection, and not compression.”

We dove into the Digital Markets Act to see what it means for us as an independent software company. Turns out, it's not just relevant – it was surprisingly enjoyable to explore!

"In a similar vein are the talks, which are little more than a series of bullet points that the speaker reads through. The problem is that the audience is likely to read through them much quicker than the speaker, so people basically know what you’re going to say in advance. As such, keep these sorts of lists in your speaker notes and pick some sort of title or image that illustrates the points you’re about to make instead."

We couldn't agree more. 😉

@ia so any ETA on iPad version of Presenter? I work on my iPad probably 95% of the time (I’m a manager, probably a key use case for Presenter) and find myself with “maybe I should just buy an Air”-levels of itch to use Presenter. Are we talking months? years?

ia,
@ia@mastodon.online avatar

@luis_in_brief we don't give ETAs but it's happening and it definitely won't take years.

@ia hey! is it possible to add sound to presentations, or inject custom HTML (or even JS!) into the presentation?

ia,
@ia@mastodon.online avatar

@sophie Hi Sophie, audio files aren't supported yet but we will add your vote to the count!
Can you please reach out directly our Support team (support+presenter@ia.net) with a sample file or a more detailed explanation of what you are trying to achieve?

I did a lot of raving about @ia ‘s Presenter last week, but it wasn’t here, because I didn’t realize iA has a presence here.

Well… now I know, so I’ll just share again that iA Presenter is the presentation tool I’ve always wanted. Focuses the process on storytelling rather than slide-building. 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟

Linking files in iAWriter (stay in the text, easy to find and edit, linking plain text files, backwards and forward navigation) vs linking files in Apple Notes on iOS17 (leave text, difficult to find and edit, uses database, no navigation).

Linking files on the upcoming iOS17 Apple Notes
